Brandeis to add six new Hall of Fame members on Oct. 5

WALTHAM, Mass. – On October 25 at 5 p.m., the Brandeis University Department of Athletics will induct its 2019 class into the Joseph M. Linsey Hall of Fame in conjunction with the Homecoming Weekend. The Friends of Brandeis Athletics will honor six former student-athletes.

Harold “Hal” Appel - Hal Appel '56 in a 3-point stance Class of 1956

As an undersized two-way lineman, measuring 5'8" and 165 pounds, Hal Appel was nonetheless one of the most respected members of Benny Friedman’s Boys. He earned Third Team All-New England honors as a senior and was recognized as an A.P. Little All-America Honorable Mention.

Barry Harsip '73 Barry Harsip - Class of 1973

One of the great men’s soccer players of the pre-Mike Coven era, Harsip was a tenacious and tough defender. He earned All-New England honors at a time when there was only one All-New England team among Division I, II and III.

Misa Fossas '85 Misael “Misa” Fossas - Class of 1985

A member of the national championship 1983 men’s cross country team, Fossas was a three-time All-America in cross country and track and field. He finished 14th at cross country nationals as a junior during the national championship year and seventh as a senior. He also placed third in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field championships as a junior.

Jerrion Benjamin Forrester '96

Jerrion (Benjamin) Forrester - Class of 1996

Perhaps the top female sprinter in program history, Forrester’s school records in the 55-, 100- and 200-meter dashes still stand 25 years later. She was a 12-time UAA champion and a four-time All-American, twice in the 55-meter dash indoors and twice outdoors in the 100-meter dash.

Matthew Christian '05 Matthew Christian - Class of 2005

One of the top all-around swimmers in men’s program history, Christian still holds the school records in the 200- and 400-yard individual medleys, but owned six individual and four relay marks when he graduated. He was a three-time All-UAA swimmer and 12-time New England champion who just missed All-America honors in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Lorraine Wingenbach Maxwell '09 Lorraine (Wingenbach) Maxwell - Class of 2009

The first All-American in volleyball program history, Maxwell is still Brandeis’s career leader in kills while ranking third in service aces and fourth in digs. She owns the top two scoring seasons in program history, her freshman and junior campaigns. The Judges won back-to-back ECAC titles in 2006 and 2007, including a program-record 28 wins in 2007.
