Four Judges earn UAA Athlete of the Week honors, Nov. 8

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The University Athletic Association has recognized four Brandeis University at UAA Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 7th, 

Men's soccer junior goalkeeper Aiden Guthro of Newburyport, Massachusetts, was selected as the UAA Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.

Guthro ended his regular season with a 1-0 shutout at NYU on Saturday. He made seven saves in the contest to end the campaign with a UAA-leading 79 saves this season. Guthro finished third in the conference with a .832 save percentage, while his 0.94 goals-against average was sixth in the league.

The Judges ended the season with a 6-7-3 record, 3-2-2 in the UAA, good for fifth place in the conference with 11 points. They ended the campaign with a 2-0-1 record in their last three games and 3-1-1 over the last five, all against teams that reached the NCAA tournament. 

Guthro is a 2019 graduate of Newburyport High School.

Junior Maggie Shealy of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was honored as the UAA Women's Fencer of the Week for the first time this season and the third time in her career. Shealy earned gold at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Fall Invitational, aka The Big One, in the women's saber competition on Sunday. Shealy went undefeated on the day, starting with a 6-0 performance in pool play, in which she out-touched her opponents 30-7 to earn the second seed in the direct elimination draw. After a first-round bye, she defeated an opponent from Sacred Heart, 15-3, in the second round and posted a 15-9 win in the third round against a foe from Smith. In the quarterfinals, Shealy dispatched the seventh seed from Stonybrook, 15-8, then earned a spot in the finals by virtue of a walkover in the semifinals. She wrapped up her unbeaten tournament with a 15-11 win over top-seeded Kristen Palmer of MIT to earn gold.

First-year Tony Escueta of Grand Prairie, Texas and sophomore Berwyn Lu of Atlanta, Ga., were named the UAA Men's Fencers of the Week for their performances at The Big One. The pair, competing in their first collegiate competition both reached the men's saber semifinals to earn bronze medals. competing in their first collegiate competition, both reached the semifinals of the men's saber draw to earn bronze medals at the NEIFC Fall Invitational, aka The Big One. Lu went 5-1 in pool play, while Escueta was 4-1. For Lu, after a relatively quick 15-3 first-round win over an opponent from BU, he had four straight bouts decided by five touches or fewer. He defeated an opponent from Dartmouth, 15-10, in the second round, then took out the fifth seed from Sacred Heart, 15-13, in the round of 16. Lu took out his second-straight higher seed in the quarterfinals by edging fourth-seeded Joshua Lo of Northeastern, 15-14, in the quarterfinals. Lu then pushed top-seeded Alan Fotiyev of UConn before falling, 15-13. On the opposite side of the draw, Escueta opened with a 15-2 romp over a foe from Northeastern before going on to defeat three straight higher seeds. He had little trouble with the 14th seed from UConn in the second round, 15-4, then upset fellow first-year and third seed Joy Qiu of Guangzhou City, China, 15-14, in the round of 16. Escueta reached the semis with a 15-9 win over sixth-seeded Mateo Villareal before bowing to seventh-seeded Aaron Lu of MIT, 15-4. 

The Brandeis fencing team returns to action this weekend at the 2021 Western Invitational at the U.S. Air Force Academy. 

Shealy is a 2019 graduate of East Chapel Hill High School. 

Escueta is a 2021 graduate of Abeka Home School Academy.

Lu is a 2020 graduate of the Lovett School.
