WALTHAM, Mass. - Brandeis University had four student-athletes earn Athlete of the Week honors in the UAA for the week ending March 1. Rookie swimmers Angela Chui of Toms River, N.J., and Marc Eder of Princeton, N.J., both competed at the ECAC All-Division Championships at Harvard and both finished the day as the top performers for the Judges. Senior Caitlin Kozel of Jamestown, R.I., earned a bronze medal in the women's epee in the Intercollegiate Fencing Association Championships. Brandeis men's track and field sophomore runner Paul Norton of Amherst, Mass., was the fourth selected with honors.
Chui was selected as Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. She produced six school records while leading the Brandeis women's swimming team to a 13th place finish out of 26 teams at the ECAC All-Division Championships. Individually, Chui broke school records in the 400-yard individual medley (4:33.24), the 200-yard IM (2:09.38) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.05). She placed seventh in the 400 IM, ninth in the 200 IM and 14th in the 200 backstroke. Chui also broke school records in the 10th-place 200 free relay (1:41.60), a ninth place 400 medley relay (4:02.25) and an 11th-place 400 free relay (3:41.28). She now owns five Brandeis individual records and is part of all five relay records. Chui has also been named as the UAA Athlete of the Week once before on the week ending November 16.
Eder was the other standout swimmer at the ECAC All-Division Championships. His preliminary time in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.79) was a new school record. It also placed him in the top 20 in all of Division III ‘B' qualifiers in the nation, making him a possible selection for a spot in the championships. In the finals of the 200 breaststroke, he finished in sixth-place with a time of 2:05.76. Eder also had a 4:10.61 time in the finals of the 400-yard individual medley. In addition, he was part of the 400 medley relay team who finished in 14th-place finish with a time of 3:35.82.
Kozel produced a bronze medal performance in the epee at the Intercollegiate Fencing Association Championships which was held at Brandeis on February 28. She earned a third seed in the direct elimination tournament after she went 7-4 in pool play. She won the first elimination bout, 15-6, over Pennsylvania and then was successful in the quarterfinals against Vassar College, 15-13. With her efforts, the epee squad placed sixth which was the Judges best finish while Brandeis finished sixth overall in the 6-weapon combined standings as the top Division III team.
Norton earned All-NEICAAA honors with a time of 14:50.50 in the 5000-meter run which placed him fifth. His time was third best amongst Division III runners. He has previously been honored as an Athlete of the Week by the UAA and has received All-New England honors this year.
Chui is a 2008 graduate of Peddie School. She is the daughter of Beck and Amy Chui of Toms River, N.J.
Eder is a 2008 graduate of The Lawrenceville School. He is the son of Scott and Lauren Eder of Princeton, N.J.
Kozel is a 2005 graduate of the Lincoln School. She is the daughter of Randy and Margaret Kozel of Jamestown, R.I.
Norton is a 2007 graduate of Amherst Regional High School. He is the son of David and Claire Norton of Amherst, Mass.
