WALTHAM, Mass. — Brandeis basketball seniors Jessica Chapin of Mendon. N.Y., and Terrell Hollins of Springfield, Mass., continue to reap post-season accolades. On Tuesday, both were named to D3hoops.com Second Team All-Northeast Region. In addition, Chapin was named first-team All-New England by the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA), while Hollins was selected to play in the National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) inaugural Senior All-Star Game in Salem, Va., on March 20.
For Chapin, a guard, this is her third post-season All-Star team. She was previously named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Year and a first-team All-Conference selection and a Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Region selection. She is now eligible for All-America honors from both the WBCA and D3hoops.com. This is the second time in her career Chapin was named All-New England by D3hoops.com and by NEWBA as an All-Star. She was also a preseason All-American selection by the web site this season. Chapin has also been selected to play in the NEWBA senior All-Star game at Western New England College on March 27. Chapin was one of three UAA Players named to a D3hoops.com All-Star team.
For Hollins, a forward, this is his first D3hoops.com selection. He was a first-team All-University Athletic Association selection, one of only two front-court players named to the seven-man team. He becomes eligible for his first All-America honor, with hopes of being selected to the NABC All-District or All-America team as well. Hollins will be one of two UAA Players to participate in the NABC Senior All-Star game, joining Sean Wallis of Washington University. He will be joined on the East All-Star squad by fellow New Englander Adam Choice of Colby College, while Blake Schultz and Joe Geoghegan of Williams will participate in the game pending the result of their NCAA semifinal contest. The game will be held at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday, preceding the national championship game.
Chapin led the University Athletic Association in scoring this season, averaging 16.9 points per game, 64th in all of NCAA Division III play. She also finished second in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6 a/to) and minutes played (32.0 mpg), third in 3-pointers made (46 3FGs), fourth in steals per game (2.2 spg) and free-throw percentage (75.9%) and sixth in assists per game (3.0 apg) and 3-point percentage (34.8%). Chapin led the Judges in scoring 17 times in their 24 games, was the squad's top rebounder five times and topped the team in assists 10 times, posting four double-doubles. She set three school records this season, with 167 career 3-pointers and 36 points and seven trifectas in a game against Carnegie Mellon on Feb 7.
Chapin wrapped up her career as the only player in school history to rank among the top 10 in points (1,280, sixth), rebounds (521, eighth), assists (262, sixth) and steals (243, third). With 405 points on the season, Chapin turned in just the fourth 400-point campaign in Brandeis history.
Overall this season, the Brandeis women posted a 16-8 record, while their string of four-straight NCAA tournaments was snapped. The Judges faced the sixth-toughest schedule in the nation according to D3hoops.com, facing seven NCAA tournament teams, including a win over Elite Eight squad Babson and a season-sweep of UAA foe and Final Four participant Rochester.
Hollins helped the Brandeis men to a 22-7 record and the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III tournament for the second time in three years. Hollins averaged 14.3 points game, second on the team, while leading the team and the UAA with 10.4 rebounds per game. He recorded a league-high 14 double-doubles on the season, including two in the NCAA tournament, reaching 19 rebounds in a game three times, including a 21-board performance in the second round against St. John Fisher College.
Hollins closed out his career 18th on Brandeis's career scoring list with 1,191 points and sixth with 706 rebounds. His 303 boards this season were tied for the third-highest single-season total in school history, while his .584 field-goal percentage was fifth all-time. Hollins also ranked among Brandeis's top-15 career leaders in steals (103, 13th) and assists (216, 14th), making him one of only two players in school history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals, joining David Brooks '92. As a member of the Class of 2010, Hollins won 83 games in his career, a school record, becoming the first group of seniors to reach the NCAA tournament four straight years.
Chapin is a 2006 graduate of Honeoye Falls-Lima High School. She is the daughter of Michael and Deborah Chapin, Mendon, N.Y.
Hollins is a 2005 graduate of Longmeadow High School. He is the son of James Hollins and Karen Hollins of Springfield, Mass.
