Asante captures second 55-meter crown with heroic effort

Brandeis track and field had three UAA champions during the indoor season – including a mile-run title from Alex Kramer ’13, who would go on to finish 12th in the nation in the event and an upset in women’s distance medley relay from an unseeded team – but Vincent Asante ’14 turned in the most dramatic performance of the meet.

A two-time UAA champion in the dashes during his freshman year when he was the conference’s Rookie of the Year both indoors and outdoors, Asante struggled with injury in his sophomore campaign. He came back strong in 2013, reclaiming his crown in the 55-meter dash. In the preliminaries, he won his head in 6.55 seconds, two-hundredths of a second behind the top seed. In the finals, he ran the same 6.55 seconds, which was 0.03 off his lifetime best, but edged runner-up Demetrios Brizzolara of Chicago by one-hundredth of a second. Unfortunately, Asante pulled a muscle in the winning effort, but he still managed to earn an additional point for the Judges at the meet, limping around the track with his leg taped up to finish eighth in the 200-meter run.
