Women’s hoops pounds UAA-leading Rochester

The hypercompetitive women’s basketball slate in the UAA once again saw three teams selected to the NCAA tournament. While Carol Simon’s charges weren’t one of those squads, their best performance of the season came on Feb. 3 against Rochester, at the time leading the conference.

The Yellowjackets were 7-1 in the league at the time, the Judges 1-7. The teams were tied at 25 at the break, and UR hit the first bucket of the second half to take a two-point lead. Kasey Dean ’14 tied it on the next possession and Janelle Rodriguez ’14 scored the next two hoops of the game and the Judges never looked back. UR got within four points with just over eight minutes left, but Brandeis held the visitors to 3-of-17 shooting down the stretch while connecting on five of their 10 shots as the Judges pulled away for a 62-49 win. Brandeis also forced six turnovers in the last nine minutes while protecting the ball themselves. Rodriguez finished with a game-high 13 points, 11 in the second half, while Dean added 11. Samantha Anderson ‘13’s nine rebounds helped keep pace with the ‘Jackets on the glass. The Judges finished the season with wins in two of their last three games to get to 10-15, while all three of their All-UAA team selections – Rodriguez, Dean and Hannah Cain ’15 – will be back in 2013-14.
