Brandeis Intramural Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are intramural sports?
Intramural Sports (IM's) are organized recreational sports leagues and tournaments within the University.

Who can play intramural sports?
Any current Brandeis student, faculty or staff. Spouses and alumni are not eligible.

Why are some sports only offered one semester per year?
We try to provide the best variety of sports that cater to all populations and their interests.

How do I sign up for an intramural team?
Intramurals sports registration takes a few easy steps. Follow these steps to register. If you have any problems, click on the live chat feature in the top right hand corner where questions can be answered.

When will registration take place?
Intramural sports will hold several registration periods throughout the semester. On average, a registration period will open for two weeks prior to the start of the season.

Can the captain of a team still sign up the entire team or does each individual person have to sign up?
The captain creates the team. However, each team member must then create an IMLeagues.com account and join that team. The captain then invites friends to join their team through the system.  Players may be added at the field as long as they have created an IM Leagues profile.

What if I don't have a full team of people to play with?
You can list yourself as a free agent for that sport. You will be visible to all members of the site and can request to join teams, or post information about yourself so teams can request to add you to their team.

How much does it cost to play intramural sports?
The major team sports that have a 2-3 week season cost $20/team.  This can be paid at the field in cash. Teams must pay by their second regular season game or they will be dropped from the league. Minor team sports have a $10 entry fee. Individual sports are free.

What happens if I register for a sport and change my mind? Can I get a refund?
Once you register for a sport, you are making a commitment to enjoy fun and competition, however you may drop out of the league only if the schedule has yet to be made. Once the schedule is made, you are committed for the season. If you end up not being able to play, the captain is still responsbile for the entry fee.

What is the forfeit policy?

If a team does not meet the minimum amount of players to start a game by 10 minutes after the scheduled time, they will forfeit the game and must pay $20 to get into playoffs. On the second forfeit, teams are dropped from the league but are not charged a forfeit fee. The $20 fee must be paid in cash by the end of the regular season.

What if my team needs a reschedule?

You may request a reschedule by emailing jmizraji@brandeis.edu however this must be done with at least 24 hours of notice. Same day reschedule requests will not be accepted. If the game cannot be rescheduled your team may concede your game without getting charged a forfeit fee if you notify the Intramural Sports Coordinator via email by 3pm the day of the game. For Sunday games, you must give notification by Friday at 3pm.

When are games played?
Game days and times vary from sport to sport. Games are typically played Sunday through Thursday from 5-11 p.m.  Once registration is over, the schedule will be made based on the time preferences listed by the captain.

How many teams can I play on?
Players can play on one men’s/women’s team and one coed team, however teams are allowed to use NOMADS. See below for nomad policy:

Nomad Policy

Nomads are defined as current rostered participant playing on a different team within the same league. Teams may use any eligible nomad to fill their nightly roster under the following conditions: Nomads must show student ID. Teams cannot have any bench players with nomads. If one of their players comes late, the nomad must leave. This will allow teams to either pick up players before hand or find players at the field/court if they are playing down.

How many people are on a team?
The number of people on a team depends on the particular sport. Check the sport specific rules.

Do we have to provide our own equipment?
Yes all equipment including balls, pinnies, goals, flags, etc are provided.

What do I need to bring to games?
You need to show your student ID card to each game to verify your identity.

I'm a current varsity (or Sport Club) athlete. Am I eligible to participate in Intramurals?

Membership on a varsity team in the season of that sport makes a player ineligible for that same or like sport during the IM season. Seniors who have finished their varsity season and are graduating at the end of the year may participate in the sport. However, volleyball is restricted to two varsity athletes and indoor soccer is restricted to three. Club volleyball can only have 2 players on a team.

In team sports, who generally makes playoffs?

Generally, teams that do not forfeit out of the season,  pay their $20 forfeit fee if needed and maintain a 3.0 for sportsmanship rating will make playoffs. If facility space and time is an issue, only the top half of teams will make playoffs.
