NORTON, MA (taken from a WC press release) - In its final
contest before the ECAC Tournament, the Brandeis University
baseball team fell to nationally-ranked Wheaton College, 10-0 on
Monday at Sidell Stadium. The Lyons, who are sixth nationally and
first in New England in the American Baseball Coaches Association's
(ABCA) latest polls, improved to 35-8 overall, while the Judges
take a 22-14-1 mark into this weekend's ECACs.
Wheaton plated a trio of runs during each the third, fourth and
sixth innings to break open a scoreless contest, beginning with
three unearned runs in the third. Senior Rafael Castillo (Queens,
NY/Christ The King) broke the deadlock with a suicide squeeze,
while sophomores Jake Yagjian
(Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) and Scott Guillerault (South
Portland, ME/South Portland) followed with RBI singles later in the
third. The Lyons tacked on three more two-out tallies in the
fourth, as Castillo doubled home a pair and came around on
Yagjian's single to make it 6-0.
After a brief rain delay, Brandeis loaded the bases with one down
in the sixth before junior Joe White (Bedford, NH/Manchester West),
the third of seven Wheaton hurlers, retired the final two batters
to escape the jam unscathed. His offense responded with a trio of
runs in the bottom of the inning, as Yagjian poked a two-run single
into left with one down, and Castillo scored on a wild pitch with
two outs. Guillerault plated Yagjian for the game's final run on an
eighth-inning sacrifice fly. Of Wheaton's 10 runs, seven came with
two outs.
Senior Zach Golden (Milton, MA/Lawrenceville School) was the lone
Judge with multiple hits, while classmate Peter Goodridge (Salem,
MA/Salem) suffered the loss after yielding a pair of unearned runs
during a third of an inning of work. Eight pitchers appeared for
Brandeis and combined to allow seven earned runs on nine hits with
seven strikeouts and three walks.
