BRUNSWICK, Maine (taken from a Bowdoin College press release) - The Bowdoin College baseball team rallied to score three unlikely runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim a 6-5 victory over Brandeis on Sunday afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to 12-11 with the Judges dropping to 11-12.

Brandeis appeared to have the game in hand with a three-run fifth inning. A two-out, bases-loaded double by Jonathan Winston plated all three runners to give the Judges a 4-0 lead. Bowdoin would close the gap to a single run later in the game, as a fifth-inning solo homer by K.J. Kozens was followed by a two-run job from Nick Lawler in the sixth, trimming the lead to 4-3. Brandeis got one back in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from John O'Brion, and held the 5-3 edge entering the ninth inning.

Bowdoin's decisive rally started on a bloop single from leadoff batter Marc Dellaire. Joe Berte lofted a single to right field that fell just beyond the outstretched arms of Ben Dashefsky, giving the Polar Bears runners on first and second with none out. After Nick Tom came in to run for Berte, Jon Koperniak worked a full count and earned a base-on-balls, loading the bases for Pat Duchette. Duchette was grazed by a pitch on a 3-2 count, bringing home Dallaire to make it 5-4.

Brandeis called on reliever Kyle Ritchie with the bases still loaded in a one-run game, and the righty forced rookie Reid Auger to pop out to short for the first out of the frame. But then things went downhill for the Judges, as Bowdoin's all-time leader in hit-by-pitches (41 career), Nick Lawler, took a pitch off the elbow, tying the game at five. The very next batter, pinch-hitter Tyler Turgeon, was hit on the wrist, bringing home the game-winning run and giving Bowdoin the victory. In all, three of the Polar
Bears' last four batters were hit by pitches to give the hosts a bizarre one-run victory.

Dashefsky and Zach Golden each had two hits and two runs to lead the Judges. Rocco Toppi went 6.1 innings, allowing one earned run in the start for Brandeis. Berte and Duchette each had two hits for Bowdoin, who got a seven-inning start from Luke Potter, who allowed just one earned run as Bowdoin committed three errors on the afternoon.
