Mainers lead Brandeis baseball in UAA opener, 12-2, over Case

SANFORD, Fla. -- A trio of Portland, Maine natives, sophomore 2B John O'Brion, senior SS Malcolm Cone-Coleman, and senior pitcher Rocco Toppi, guided the Brandeis University baseball team to a 12-2 victory today in the Judges' University Athletic Association (UAA) opener against Case Western Reserve University.

Brandeis (2-0) got six innings of two-hit ball from Toppi to pick up the win on the hill. He struck out three, walked two and hit two batters in allowing two earned runs to earn his first win since his sophomore season.

Offensively, O'Brion and Cone-Coleman combined to go 5-for-7 with six RBI. After the Judges scored an unearned run in the first, O'Brion gave the Judges a 4-0 lead in the second with his second collegiate home run, a three-run blast to center field, plating Cone-Coleman and rookie 3B Tony Deshler (Pepperell, Mass.).

In the fifth inning, the Judges pushed the lead to 6-0, with one run coming home on an error and another on a Cone-Coleman sacrifice fly. Case got two runs back in the bottom of sixth, but the Judges tacked on three runs each in the seventh and eighth, including an RBI single and another sacrifice fly by Cone-Coleman.
