Baseball blanks Case, 11-0, to improve to 4-1

SANFORD, Fla. -- Brandeis University rookie lefty Justin Duncombe (Canyon County, Calif.) scattered four hits over 6.2 innings today and five different players had multi-hit games as the Judges defeated Case Western Reserve University, 11-0, in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest at Sanford Memorial Stadium today.

Brandeis (4-1, 3-1 UAA) got a fine performance from Duncombe in his collegiate debut. He struck out seven and walked just one, allowing only on Spartan baserunner past second base. Case (1-6, 0-4 UAA) had only one real threat to score. In the fourth inning, they had runners on the corners with one out, but Duncombe induced a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning unscathed.

Offensively, Brandeis was led by rookie LF Tony Deshler (Pepperell, Mass.), who went 3-4 at the top of the order with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore outfielder David Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) was 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. He knocked in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Sophomore 2B John O'Brion (Portland, Maine) kept up his hot hitting by going 2-3 with a double and two runs scored. He is hitting .500 so far this season. The other two Brandeis multiple hitters were sophomore catcher Artie Posch (Hopedale, Mass.), who was 2-4 with a run scored, and junior DH Mike Alfego (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who went 2-3 with a pair RBI.

The Judges close the UAA tourney with games against Washington University tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. and Emory University, the only team to have defeated the Judges this season, on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
