Baseball bashes Johnson & Wales, 18-5

(courtesy JWU sports info)– Brandeis University senior lefty Tyler Robinson (Manotick, Ontario) improved to 5-1 this season today behind the big bats of the Judges' offense, in an 18-5 victory over Johnson and Wales University. Robinson allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in six and two third innings of work.

Johnson & Wales (22-12) got on the board in the bottom of the first when junior Matt Newsome (Providence, R.I.) led off with a single and scored on an RBI single by senior Mike Ziman (Bridgeport, Conn.). Brandeis (12-10) responded in the top of the second when a solo home run by sophomore John O’Brion (Portland, Maine) knotted the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the second, the Wildcats regained the lead on an RBI groundout by senior Mike Wengzn (Manchester, Conn.), scoring junior Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) to put the team up 2-1. Brandeis knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the third on an RBI double by sophomore Drake Livada (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). The Judges then capitalized on a JWU miscue for the 3-2 advantage and went ahead 4-2 on an RBI single by freshman Pat Nicholson (East Walpole, Mass.) in the third inning. Brandeis broke the game open in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on four hits to take the 7-2 lead and added seven more in the top of the sixth en route to the 18-5 victory.

Nicholson was 5-for-6 with three runs and three RBI while freshman Tony Deshler (Pepperell, Mass.) was 4-for-7 with three run and two RBI in the win for Brandeis. Ziman was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, including a solo home run in the setback for the Wildcats.
