Baseball wins fifth straight, 3-2, over Mount St. Mary's

ORLANDO, Fla. – Senior 1B Eric Rosenberg (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) went 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and  run scored, and four Brandeis pitchers scattered eight hits to lead the Judges to their fifth-straight win, a 3-2 victory over Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) College in a non-conference match-up at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex. The Judges move to 5-3 on the season with the win as the prepare for the University Athletic Association tournament. MSMC falls to 1-6.

The Judges and Knights had base-runners in five of the first six half-innings, but no one was able to break through until the top of the fourth. With one away, sophomore catcher Chris Ferro (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) singled. He moved to second on a groundout, but Rosenberg followed with his second three-bagger of the season – and his career – to give Brandeis a 1-0 lead. After a walk to sophomore CF Nick Cortese (Guaynabo, P.R./Baldwin School of Puerto Rico), junior Zach Malis (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore J.F.K.) singled home the second run of the inning.

Mt. St. Mary threatened in the bottom of the fourth, but Ferro threw out a runner trying to steal and rookie Colin Markel (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) stranded two more Knights later in the inning. Markel, who made his first collegiate start, had a fine outing, going four innings of three-hit ball, striking out five and walking one.

MSMC got on the board in the fifth against junior lefty Alex Tynan (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) without benefit of a hit. Sophomore 3B Tyler McNoble walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch, third on a groundout and scored on an error. The Knights would put another runner on with just one out in the frame, but Tynan got a fly out and a grounder to short to escape further damage.

Brandeis got a key insurance run in the sixth. Senior SS Tony Deshler (Pepperell, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) doubled to lead off the frame and moved to third on a Rosenberg single. Cortese laid down a perfect squeeze bunt, making the lead 3-1, Judges.

Brandeis sophomore reliever Jesse Link (Weston, Conn/Weston) had a fine performance behind Tynan, stranding a pair of Knight runners in the sixth inning and inducing double plays in the seventh and eighth to emerge unscathed. MSMC faced Brandeis sophomore Mike Swerdloff (Scarsdale, N.Y./Ardsley) in the ninth, and scored one run on an RBI single by 2B Joe Clarke. The Knights had runners on the corners down by a run with just one out, but Swerdloff got a strikeout and a flyout to right, securing his first collegiate save.

In addition to Rosenberg (3-4, RBI, R, 3B), the Judges' other multiple hitters were Deshler (2-4, R, 2B, SB) and sophomore DH Kenny Destremps (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee), who was 2-5 with two stolen bases. Tynan earned his second win of the season in relief.
