Baseball drops two at #22 Trinity (Conn.) to close season

Hartford, Conn. (courtesy Trinity sports information) – The Brandeis baseball team concluded its 2012 season with a pair of games at Trinity (Conn.) College, ranked No. 22 in the nation. The Judges fell by scores of 3-0 and 6-4 to end their season with a record of 8-31.

For Trinity, sophomore RHPs Peter Burrows (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Pat Carbone (North Wales, Pa.) combined on a seven-hit shutout in the first game and junior Alex Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI in the nightcap to lead the Bantams to a the sweep.

Burrows allowed six hits and walked four with a pair of strikeouts, before yielding to Carbone who gave up a hit and a walk before saving the opening game with a strikeout.  Trinity scored runs in each of the first two innings on RBI singles by senior tri-captain Kevin Mortimer (Spencer, Mass.) and freshman 3B Adam Moossmann (East Northport, N.Y.), respectively, and added a third run in the fourth frame on a another run-scoring base hit by Moossmann.  Junior Chris Ferro (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) was 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base for the Judge offense, while junior lefty Mike Swerdloff (Scarsdale, N.Y./Ardsley) took the loss on the hill for Brandeis allowing eight hits and three runs over five innings.

In game two, Brandeis senior tri-captain Sean O'Hare (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) started the game with a double and scored on a groundout to give the visitors a 1-0 lead early, but Trinity came back with two runs in the bottom of the first when Almeida singled and junior OF Michael Rueger (Teaneck, N.J.) blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall.  The Bantams went on to score once in each of the next two frames and twice in the fourth, including once on a solo shot by junior SS Steve Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) and twice on a two-run double by Almeida.  Trinity senior tri-captain RHP Angus Anderson (Middletown, R.I.) earned the win with three innings of relief, while junior righty D.J. Goldberg (Plainville, Mass.) pitched out of jam in the fifth inning and added did not allow a hit over seven outs to record a save.  Ferro was 2-for-4 with a double and freshman Kyle Brenner (Brookfield, Mass./St. Peter-Marian) was also 2-for-4 for Brandeis offensively.
