McCarthy earned UAA Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career by hitting safely in all four games for the Brandeis baseball team last week. He hit .562 (9-16) during the week and led the Judges with a .688 slugging percentage. He had two doubles, three RBI and four runs scored. McCarthy had three multi-hit games during the week, including a career-best 4-for-4 performance on April 7 as the Judges defeated Framingham State University, 10-6. McCarthy scored twice and drove in a run in that contest, his third-straight game with an RBI.
Overall this season, McCarthy is tied for second among Brandeis regulars with a .315 batting average (23-73) and leads the squad with six doubles and seven extra-base hits for a .438 slugging percentage, also second on the squad. His nine RBI are tied for third and eight runs scored are tied for fourth. Earlier this season, he hit his first career home run, a solo shot in a 4-2 UAA win over Case Western Reserve University on March 12. The Judges are 7-15 under head coach Pete Varney, in his 32nd year at Brandeis.
Genovese, who earlier this season earned UAA Tournament MVP honors, hit .455 (10-22) with two RBI and nine runs scored and eight stolen bases last week as the Judges went 6-0. She hit safely in five of the six contests and had stolen bases in all six. Genovese extended her hitting streak to 20 games to start the season before going hitless in the second game of a doubleheader against Framingham State on April 5.
At the end of the week, she had a stolen base in all but two contests this season. With steals in both ends of a doubleheader against Lasell College on April 7, Genovese tied and broke Brandeis's single-season record with her 32nd and 33rd of the campaign. She broke the mark established by Melisa Cagar '11 in 2010. In the latest NCAA statistical rankings, she leads all of college softball with 1.32 stolen bases per game. For her career, in a season-and-a-half, Genovese has 55 steals, ranked third on Brandeis's career list, with Cagar's career mark of 72 within reach if she is able to keep up her pace for the rest of the season. Genovese is also 23rd in Division III with a .494 batting average in the most recent NCAA statistics.
Overall this season, the Judges are 16-9 after a double-header split with Wheaton College on Tuesday. Last week's performance also included the 200th win of head coach Jessica Johnson's nine-year career (seventh at Brandeis), a 6-4 victory over UMass Boston on April 4.

Genovese is a 2011 graduate of North Haven High School. She is the daughter of Mark and Caren Genovese, North Haven, Conn.
