Falkson named UAA Rookie of the Year; O'Neill earns first-team status

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team had two first-year players honored by the University Athletic Association on their post-season All-UAA teams. Shortstop Nick Falkson of Dedham, Mass., was named the UAA Rookie of the Year and a second-team All-Association team member, while classmate Sean O'Neill of Reading, Mass., was a first-team All-Association pitcher.

Falkson is the second Judge in three years to be named UAA Rookie of the Year and sixth since the UAA started giving the award in 2001. Falkson was one of only two Brandeis players to appear in all 33 games this season, starting all of them at short. He led the team and was fifth in the UAA with a .373 batting average. He also led the squad with 47 hits, 13 doubles (fifth in the UAA) and was tied for second with three home runs. He had a .548 slugging percentage, seventh-highest in the UAA. Falkson earned UAA Hitter of the Week for his first collegiate week of action, when he hit safely in six-straight games for a .458 batting average. Also a member of the UAA All-Tournament team, Falkson hit safely in his first 16 games of his collegiate career. It was the team's longest hit streak of the season.

O'Neill finished with a 5-2 record – tied for sixth in the conference in wins - and a 2.18 earned-run average, second-lowest in the UAA. His 57.2 innings pitched led the team and were seventh in the UAA, while his four complete games were second only to teammate Sam Miller of Sudbury, Mass. O'Neill was twice named UAA Pitcher of the Week, once after throwing a complete-game four-hitter against conference rival NYU on March 29 and again after allowing just one earned run in 10.2 innings, as he threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief on April 22 at Curry and threw a seven-hitter in a 3-1 against Trinity College on April 26. O'Neill three seven innings or more in seven of his eight starts this season.

Brandeis finished the 2015 season with a 13-20 record in head coach Pete Varney's 34th season. The season included the 700th win of Varney's career on April 7 against Worcester State, making him the 13th active coach in Division III to reach the milestone.
