AUBURNDALE, Fla. –  For the second time in as many games, the Brandeis University baseball team defeated St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) by a 4-3 score with a run in the late innings. Graduate student shortstop Rob Trenk (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was the hero today, driving in all three Judges' runs in the first nine innings and scoring the game-winner in the 11th as Brandeis improved to 2-0 under head coach Derek Carlson '91.

TRENK'S BIG DAY

  • Trenk was fantastic at the plate with a career-high four hits in five at-bats, 3 RBI and a run scored.
  • After singling in the second, Trenk missed out on scoring the Judges' first run three batters later when he was thrown out trying to score on a potential wild pitch.
  • He came back up in the third with runners in scoring position and two away and delivered a single to right-center to get Brandeis within 3-2.
  • With two out in the bottom of the fifth, the Judges put runners on the corners when senior RF Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) singled back to the mound and senior PH Max Hart (Montville, Conn./Montville) reached on an error, putting runners on the corners.
  • Trenk followed with a single to left-center to tie the game at 3-all.
  • SJC retired Trenk in the eighth inning on a 4-6-3 double play, setting up extra-inning heroics.
  • With one away, he singled through the left side. Junior Ryan Tettemer (Westfield, Mass./Suffield Acad.) followed with a single to right.
  • After Bear reliever Connor Pasetti got a strikeout for the second out of the inning, he uncorked two wild pitches with senior 1B Greg Heineman (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug) at the plate, allowing Trenk to score the winning run.

FANTASTIC PITCHING PERFORMANCE

  • Brandeis junior captain Anthony Nomakeo (Westfield, Mass. / Northfield Mt. Hermon) got the start and gave up three runs on three hits in the first inning as the Judges fell behind, 3-0.
  • Nomakeo and two relievers went on to allow just four hits over the next 10 innings, striking out two and walking none.
  • After his tough first frame, Nomakeo settled down and faced just nine batters in the next three innings, allowing one runner on a hit-by-pitch in the fourth. He was erased trying to steal second.
  • Sophomore Bradley Bousquet (Athol, Mass. / Athol) followed in the fifth inning and tossed four frames of two-hit ball. He struck out a career-high six in his longest collegiate outing.
  • Junior Liam Coughlin (Townsend, Mass. / Lowell Catholic) came in to start the ninth inning and finished the job with three innings of work, allowing two hits with a strikeout.
  • Coughlin allowed three baserunners, but erased two of them on double plays and in the 11th inning stranded a third at third base after a lead-off single, a bunt and another ground-out.
  • Coughlin earned his first career win in eight decisions.

FOR THE BEARS

  • St. Joseph's Brian Luebcke had a terrific performance for the Bears.
  • On the hill, he went nine innings and allowed nine hits, striking out 10 Brandeis hitters while walking two.
  • Two of the three runs he allowed were unearned.
  • Luebcke also went 1-for-4 with a double at the plate, driving in a run and scoring another in SJC's three-run first inning.
