Miller, Trenk earn D3baseball, UAA honors

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University baseball players Rob Trenk of West Orange, N.J., and Sam Miller of Sudbury, Mass., have earned three weekly honors between them for their performances in the Judges' opening week of the 2016 season. Both were named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week, while Trenk added University Athletic Association Hitter of the Week honors.

Trenk, a graduate student, was honored as the shortstop on the D3baseball team and earned his first UAA Athlete of the Week honor. He led the Judges offensively during a 3-0 sweep of St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) between February 17 and 19 in Central Florida as part of the RussMatt Invitational. Trenk hit safely in all three games with seven hits in 12 at-bats for a .583 average. He led the Judges with five RBI and tied for the team lead with three runs scored.

Trenk went 2-4 with an RBI, a double and a run scored in a 4-3 come-from-behind win in the opener, scoring the tying run in the top of the ninth inning. In another 4-3 win, Trenk was responsible for all four runs, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning. He closed out the set with a 1-for-3 performance with an RBI and run scored in an 8-2 victory in the series finale.

Miller, a two-time UAA Pitcher of the Week last season, was named one of three D3Baseball.com Starting Pitchers of the Week. He was outstanding in his first start of the season against SJC, as he went 5.2 innings and allowed just one hitter over the minimum during his time on the hill. After allowing a two-out single in the first inning, Miller retired 15 Bears in a row, including two strikeouts. He improved to 7-3 in his career.

The Judges are in their first season under head coach Derek Carlson '91. They are off until early March when they return to Florida for the 2016 University Athletic Association championships.

Trenk is a 2011 graduate of West Orange High School.

Miller is a 2012 graduate of Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School.
