SANFORD, Fla. – In its third game of the 2016 University Athletic Association tournament, the Brandeis University baseball team dropped a 7-4 decision to Emory University yesterday. The Judges fall to 4-2 overall, while the Eagles, ranked third in Division III, improve to 12-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emory scored three first-inning runs against Brandeis senior Sam Miller (Sudbury, Mass. / Lincoln-Sudbury) on four hits. Eagles Nick Chambers and Ben Vizvary knocked in one and two runs, respectively, on singles to center field.

  • The Eagles had runners on first and third with two outs, but Miller escaped more trouble by inducing a pop-up.

  • The Judges made it a 3-2 game in top of the fourth inning. With one out, graduate student Rob Trenk (West Orange, N.J. / West Orange) was hit by a pitch, and senior Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) doubled down the right-field line to advance Trenk to third. Connor Doyle got the Judges on the board with a sacrifice fly, scoring Trenk, and rookie Benjamin Bavly (Newton, Mass. / Newton South) followed with a single to drive home Healy.

  • Emory got one run back in the bottom of the inning with two outs, thanks to Chris Slivka's walk and steal of second base, followed by Mitch Kerner's RBI single up the middle.

  • The Eagles extended their lead to 6-2 in the fifth before Miller got a strikeout to end the inning with runners on first and second base.

  • Emory tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. The run was unearned, as Miller's throwing error on a pickoff attempt at first base allowed the runner to move into scoring position and come home on a single.

  • Brandeis got the run back in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by junior infielder Jay Schaff (Cheshire, Conn. / Xavier).

  • The Judges added a run in the ninth. Senior catcher Connor Doyle (Avon, Conn. / Avon Old Farms) singled and advanced to second on catcher's interference. He moved to third on a groundout and junior pinch-hitter Anthony Nomakeo (Westfield, Mass. / Northfield Mt. Hermon) brought him home on a sacrifice fly.

FOR BRANDEIS – HITTERS

  • Healy and Bavly each had two hits, with Bavly responsible for two runs with an RBI and a run scored. Healy also scored a run and leads the team with six.

  • Seven of the Judges' nine starters had hits.

  • Three of the team's four runs were scored on sacrifice flies.

  • Healy's double was the team's only extra-base hit.

  • Bavly also stole a base.

FOR BRANDEIS – PITCHERS

  • Miller fell to 1-1 on the season, allowing ten hits and seven runs, six earned, in 5.1 innings. He also struck out six and walked four.

  • Sophomore Ryan Pocock (Westford, Mass. / Westford) sparkled in relief, allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings. He also fanned six and walking none.

FOR EMORY

  • Ben Vizvary led the Eagles with three RBIs.

  • Starter Billy Dimlow earned the win to move to 3-0 on the season. He allowed eight hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts and no walks.

  • The Eagles had four batters with two hits.  Chambers's double was the team's only extra-base hit.
