BOSTON, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team saw a pair of University Athletic Association games against Emory University relocated from Stein Diamond in Waltham to UMass Boston's Monan Park today. The Judges were unable to get the bats going against the 24th-ranked Eagles, falling 6-0 in the opener and 3-0 in the nightcap.
The Judges had just three hits in each game, as Eagle pitchers Jackson Weeg and Billy Dimlow each tossed complete games. Weeg struck out 11 Brandeis hitters in his seven innings of work, while Dimlow K'ed 10.
Emory had seven hits from six different players, with 1B Bubby Terp going 2-3 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI. Terp successfully avoided a tag at the plate on a double steal in the second inning that would be all the scoring the Eagles would need. The visitors from Atlanta scored four times in the fourth inning to open things up and tacked on an unearned insurance run in the seventh.
Brandeis's three hits came from rookies Victor Oppenheimer (West Hills, Calif. / Chaminade), Dan O'Leary (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) and Joshua Rakowsky (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield). Junior Sean O'Neill (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out six and walked two, falling to 1-2 on the season.
In the second game, the Eagles got a two-out, two-run double in the second inning off the bat of shortstop Richard Brereton to supply their winning runs. Brandeis rookie Greg Tobin (Medway, Mass./Catholic Memorial) was effective, allowing six hits and just the two earned runs in five innings of work. He struck out five, walked none, and stranded runners in scoring position in four of his five innings. Dimlow was even better, however, allowing just one Brandeis hitter past first base, when O'Leary doubled with one out in the seventh. Oppenheimer and senior Ryan Tettemer (Westfield, Mass./Suffield Acad.) had the other two Brandeis hits. Dimlow improved to 6-1 on the season and lowered his UAA-leading ERA to 0.86.
The Judges (1-11, 0-6 UAA) and Eagles (21-11, 4-6 UAA) conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with two more seven inning contests at UMass Boston.
