WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team placed four members on the All-University Athletic Association squad today. Sophomore infielder Mike Khoury of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, was named to the All-UAA first team, while sophomore infielder Isaac Fossas of Dudley Massachusetts, sophomore centerfielder Dan Frey of Ipswich, Massachusetts, and junior second baseman Victor Oppenheimer of West Hills, California, were second-team selections.
Khoury, who split time between shortstop and third base this season, was the team's top offensive threat. He led the Judges in nearly every major category: batting average (.370), slugging percentage (.637), on-base percentage (.485), hits (50), runs (47), RBI (41), home runs (7) and walks (27). He was tied for second on the squad with 11 doubles, finished second in the UAA in runs scored and RBI and was third in slugging and home runs. Khoury hit safely in 25 of 37 games this season, including 17 multi-hit games. In one seven-game stretch this season, from April 10th through the 21st, he went 19-for-30 with 13 runs scored and 15 RBI. Khoury hit .339 with five doubles, one triple, one home run, 12 RBI and 15 runs scored in UAA contests this season. Khoury had one four-hit game against Becker on April 11th, a game in which he drove in four, as well.
Frey started all 37 games for the Judges this season in center field. He was third on the team in batting average at .315, while finishing second with 38 RBI and fourth with 22 runs scored. Frey had 11 doubles, one triple and three home runs for a .485 slugging percentage. He also led the Judges with seven stolen bases. His 38 RBI were tied for fourth-most in the UAA, while finishing fifth with 20 walks to give him a .409 on-base percentage. He hit safely in 22 games this season with 12 multi-hit games. Twice he had four hits in a contest, March 11 against Tufts and March 30 against Emory in UAA play. He also drove in eight runs in a 17-14 win over Nichols College on March 12, while driving in five with a triple and a home run against Newbury College on April 10.
Fossas split time at third base and first base this season, playing in all 37 contests. He hit .306, fourth-best among Judge regulars, while finishing third in runs scored (29) and RBI (36). Fossas led the team and was second in the conference with 13 doubles. He was second on the Judges with four home runs, which tied for fifth-most in the UAA. Fossas was 10th in the UAA with a .493 slugging percentage and had a .400 on-base percentage. He had 16 RBI in conference games, third-most in the UAA, while his three conference home runs were second. Fossas hit safely in 27 of 37 games with 11 multi-hit games. He had two three-hit games and a four-RBI game against Newbury on April 10.
Oppenheimer started all 37 games at second base for the Judges and batted leadoff. He hit .283 with 46 runs scored, one shy of Khoury's team-leading total and third-most in the UAA. He tied with Frey and Khoury to finish fifth in the league with 11 doubles. Oppenheimer drove in 21 runs and hit three homers this season. He had a .414 slugging percentage and .355 on-base percentage. He hit safely in 25 of 37 contests and had 11 multi-hit games. Oppenheimer tied a school record on April 10th against Newbury with seven at-bats in a game, going 3-for-7 with three runs scored, two RBI and two doubles.
In head coach Derek Carlson's fourth season at the helm, the Brandeis baseball team went 17-20, surpassing their win total from the previous two seasons combined. The Judges graduate only one senior as they look to continue to improve next season.
