Khoury leads five on All-UAA Baseball team

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team has had five members selected to the 2021 University Athletic Association (UAA) All-Association team, including four repeat members and one newcomer.

Senior centerfielder Dan Frey of Ipswich, Massachusetts, was honored for the first time since his sophomore season. He established career-highs with a .354 batting average (17-48) and a .521 slugging percentage. He drove in 15 runs, tied for second on the team and eighth in the conference, and scored 14 runs, fifth on the squad. Frey's eight doubles were third-most in the UAA this season, while his 0.53 doubles per game were ranked 37th among all Division III players. Frey also led the Judges with seven stolen bases, ranked fifth in the league. He hit safely in 11 of the team's 15 games and reached base in 13 of them.  

Frey is a 2017 graduate of St. John's Prep.

Senior catcher Luke Hall of Georgetown, Massachusetts, was recognized for the second year in a row. Hall tied for third on the team with a .362 batting average (17-47) and was second with 17 runs scored and three home runs. He drove in 14, fourth-most on the Judges, and turned in a .596 slugging percentage and .466 on-base percentage, both fifth-highest in the UAA. Hall reached base in all 15 games this season, registering hits in 12 of them. He had a pair of big-RBI games, driving in five in a 12-11 win over Johnson and Wales on April 10, including a grand slam, and four in a 22-1 win over Lasell on April 24. Hall also turned in a fine defensive campaign behind the plate, throwing out a league-high five would-be base-stealers out of 15 attempts.

Hall is a 2017 graduate of Georgetown High School.

Senior outfielder Mike Khoury of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, was selected for the fourth time, making him the first player in school history to earn All-Association baseball honors four times. Khoury led the UAA in slugging percentage (.702) and tied for the league lead with four home runs while adding four doubles. His 15 RBI tied for second on the squad with Frey, good for eighth in the league. His .362 batting average (17-37) tied with Hall for third-highest on the team and fifth in the conference. Khoury hit safely in 12 of the Judges' 15 games this season and scored runs in 13 of them, finishing with a team-high 20 to rank sixth in the UAA. Khoury's four homers this season give him 18 for his career, which ranks fifth on Brandeis's career list, while his 84 RBI rank 20th all-time at Brandeis.

Khoury is a 2017 graduate of East Bridgewater High School.

Sophomore third baseman Brian King of Palos Verde, California, is a first-time All-UAA honoree. King hit .421 (16-38) this season, second-highest on the team and in the UAA. He had four doubles and a home run, with 14 RBI and 10 runs scored. King finished second on the team with a.605 slugging percentage and was second with a .500 on-base percentage. He hit safely in 10 of 14 games this season, reaching base in all but one contest.

King is a 2019 graduate of Palos Verde High School.

Graduate student pitcher Greg Tobin of Medway, Massachusetts, was honored for the second-straight year. Tobin, a lefty, led the Brandeis pitching staff with a 3-0 record and a 2.57 earned run average, the fifth-lowest in the league. He struck out a team-high 25 batters and was third on the squad with 21 innings pitched. Tobin went six innings in three of his four starts this season and allowed one earned run or fewer in three as well. His top performance was a nine-strikeout, no-walk outing against Lasell University on April 7.

Tobin is a 2016 graduate of Catholic Memorial School.

The Brandeis baseball team, in its sixth season under head coach Derek Carlson '91 finished the 2021 season with a 12-3 record. The Judges led the UAA in team batting average (.328), on-base percentage (.422), slugging percentage (.501) and runs per game (9.4), while finishing second in ERA (3.77) and third in fielding percentage (.953). Their slugging percentage ranks 44th in Division III, while their scoring offense is 27th and their 2.40 doubles per game are 37th.
