BEVERLY, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team faced an alumnus head coach for the second day in a row, but couldn't come up with any answers for Brian Haley '99's Endicott squad, falling 20-0 to the Gulls.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis, 1-1.
  • Endicott, 2-0, ranked #10 in Division III by Collegiate Baseball, #12 by D3Baseball.com

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After scoring three runs in the first against sophomore Winston Wacha (Newton, Mass. / Newton South), who was making his first start, the Gulls sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs against Wacha and two Brandeis relievers in the second.
  • The Gulls would add two more runs in the third.
  • The Judges kept them off the board again until they tacked on three in the eighth.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Brandeis got five hits, all singles, from the top three in their order. Junior CF Sam Nugent (Mansfield, Mass. / Mansfield) and senior RF Steven Simon (Hanover, Mass. / Hanover) had two hits, and first-year 2B Alex Kim (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) had one.
  • Junior 1B Nick Heafey (Florence, Mass. / Williston-Northampton School) stole a base.
  • Wacha suffered the loss in his first start after missing his rookie season to elbow surgery.
  • All nine Endicott starters had hits. CF Caleb Shpur wielded the big bat, homering twice and tripling, driving in six RBI and scoring three runs.
  • Gabe Van Emon went six innings, allowing four hits and five strikeout without walking a batter.
  • Brady Stuart earned an unlikely save, allowing one hit in three innings of relief. He struck out two and walked one.
