MEDFORD,  Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team got a pair of solo home runs as part of their scoring today, but the Judges couldn't overcome host Tufts in a 9-3 defeat today.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis, 1-2.
  • Tufts, 2-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After getting shut out yesterday, the Judges wasted no time getting on the board in this one as junior CF Sam Nugent (Mansfield, Mass. / Mansfield) drove a home run to left field to lead off the game. It was Nugent's first of the season and third of his career.
  • The Jumbos got the run back in the bottom of the first when LF Ben Leonard led off with a double and scored after back-to-back infield grounders.
  • Tufts added two more runs in the second after another lead-off double from Todd Stawecki. Brandeis junior starter Sean Decker-Jacoby (Los Angeles, Calif. / Vistimar) retired the next two batters, but the hosts got a single to right to put runners on the corners. Stawecki scored when Decker-Jacoby's pick-off attempt went down the line in left. 2B Henry Fleckner's fly ball to left was lost in the sun, allowing a second run to score in the frame and giving the Jumbos a 3-1 lead.
  • The Jumbos made it 4-1 on a Jackson Duffy one-out triple and a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
  • Brandeis's second run came in the top of the fifth when senior RF Steven Simon (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) drilled his first home run of the season and the fifth of his career to left to almost the same spot at Nugent's.
  • Tufts added solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings before Judge sophomore Aidan Schleer (Sparta, N.J. / Avon Old Farms (Conn.) delivered a pinch RBI single after two walks. Brandeis could not get any closer, and Tufts plated three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to close out the contest.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Five Brandeis players delivered their six hits, with first-year DH Alex Kim (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) posting the only multi-hit game. He was 2-for-5 with a double, the team's only extra-base hit outside of the home runs.
  • Decker-Jacoby suffered the loss, giving up five hits and five earned runs in 4.1 innings. He struck out four and did not walk anyone, but hit a batter.
  • Tufts rapped out nine hits, five going for extra bases. Flecker had the best day for the hosts, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, a run and a double. The Jumbos also had six stolen bases in the contest.
  • Silas Reed went four innings for Tufts to earn the win. He gave up three hits and one earned run, walking five and striking out seven.
