Baseball splits high-scoring doubleheader at NYU to pick up first UAA win

BROOKYLN, N.Y. – The Brandeis University baseball team earned its first University Athletic Association win of the season today as the Judges split a doubleheader with New York University today at Maimonides Stadium. The Judges won the opener 11-9, but dropped game 2, 21-0.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 5-12, 1-3 UAA.
  • NYU: 11-8, 4-3 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (Brandeis 11, NYU 9)

  • The Judges scored a season-high 11 runs and tied their season-best with 13 hits in support of senior Asher Kaplan (Jamaica Plain, Mass. / Boston Latin).
  • Kaplan threw seven innings, allowing six hits and six runs, issuing one walk and striking out a season-high eight NYU batters.
  • At the plate, Brandeis was paced by first-year DH Alex Kim (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep) and sophomore catcher Justin Keeler (Seymore, Conn. / St. Joseph's), who each went 3-5 with a run scored. Kim also had an RBI, while Keeler added a double.
  • Junior 1B Nick Heafey (Florence, Mass. / Williston-Northampton School) went 2-4 with two runs and two RBI. Senior 2B Mike DiCenso (Cranston, R.I. / Moses Brown) also had two RBI on the game.
  • The Judges struck quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the first.
  • NYU answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, but Kaplan avoided further trouble, getting a strikeout with two runners in scoring position.
  • Brandeis expanded their lead to 7-1 in the fourth inning thanks to a two-run single by DiCenso, a Steven Simon (Hanover, Mass. / Hanover) RBI double and Kim single.
  • NYU got three of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single by Nate Pallotta.
  • The Judges added a single run in the sixth on a Kim single and two more in the seventh on Heafey's single up the middle that made it 10-4.
  • The Violets clawed their way back into the game, with Nick Argenziano drilling a two-run homer off of Kaplan and scoring three more runs off of reliever Reid Latham (North Easton, Mass. / Oliver Ames), with the Judges adding a run on an error.
  • Senior Christian Petrisko (Fort Lauderdale, Fla / Westminster Academy) retired five of the seven NYU hitters he faced to earn a save, the first of his career.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (NYU 21, Brandeis 0 – 7 innings)

  • The Violets scored runs in all six at-bats in the second game, plating 21 runs on 14 hits, nine walks and three hit batters.
  • Ten different NYU players had hits, 14 Violets scored runs and 11 had RBI.
  • With a seven-run fifth inning and eight-run sixth, the Violets ended the game early due to the UAA's 10-run rule.
  • CF Alex Vanlandingham led the home team, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, three RBI and a double. 2B Russell Burton drove in three runs for NYU, while 3B Cam Dunn hit a solo home run.
  • Brandeis senior 3B Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif. / Palos Verde) had two of the Judges' six hits.
  • John Gassler got the win on the hill for NYU, allowing five of the six hits, striking out eight and walking four in six innings of work to improve to 3-3.
  • Brandeis first-year Tyler Hill (Lansdale, Pa / La Salle College High School) allowed five hits and four runs with a walk and a strikeout in the first two innings to suffer the loss, falling to 0-4 on the campaign.
