Baseball drops 13-2 decision to Babson

WALTHAM, Mass. – A couple of big innings were costly to the Brandeis University baseball team today as the Judges dropped a 13-2 contest to non-conference foe Babson College today on Stein Diamond.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 5-13.
  • Babson: 12-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Aside from one solo home run by Babson DH Jackson Kelly in the second inning, the Beavers did their damage in a five-run third, four-run fifth and three-run eighth before the game was called.
  • In addition to Kelly, the Beaves' big hitter was RF Ryan Hvozdovic, who went 4-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. He had a two-run single in the third, an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI double in the eighth.
  • 1B Chris Basile had an RBI triple for the only other extra-base hit in the game.
  • Brandeis's offense had seven hits from six different players, with senior CF Sam Nugent (Mansfield, Mass. / Mansfield) going 3-3 with a run scored.
  • Senior SS Drew Michaud (Madison, Conn / Xavier) had Brandeis's only RBI, driving in Nugent in the fourth inning.
  • Senior infielder Mike DiCenso (Cranston, R.I. / Moses Brown) scored a run in the seventh on an error on a ball hit by rookie Alex Kim (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep).
  • It was a staff pitching day for both squads, with Babson's Adam Smith earning the win after allowing four hits and one earned run in 3.1 innings of work. He improved to 1-0 on the season.
  • Brandeis senior Jakob Newman (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Mira Costa) only allowed one run in his inning of work, but was saddled with the loss, falling to 0-2.
