AMHERST, Mass. – Brandeis University baseball senior Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif./Palos Verde) had a fine all-around day, going 2-for-3 with a home run and a double at the plate while throwing 1.2 scoreless innings, but the short-handed Judges fell to host Amherst College, 14-3, today in a road contest.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 5-18.
  • Amherst: 10-7-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges struck first for two runs in the opening in this one. They scored on first-year Alex Kim's (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall Prep.) ground out that plated senior Sam Nugent (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield), who had singled and moved from first to third on a wild pitch.
  • King and senior Drew Michaud (Madison, Conn./Xavier) then hit back-to-back doubles with two away to make it 2-0.
  • Brandeis rookie Vincenzo Terraciano (Woodland Hills, Calif./Viewpoint), who got through the first inning unscathed after working around an error, allowed seven hits in the second inning as the Mammoths scored eight runs. Two of the hits he allowed were home runs as AC took an 8-2 lead after two innings.
  • King added his second home run of the season and the sixth of his career with two out in the third inning to make it 8-3.
  • Amherst added two run frames in the fourth and fifth before scoring twice in the seventh to close out the scoring and the game, 14-3.
  • King and Nugent each had two hits for the Judges at the plate.
  • Terraciano suffered the loss in his first collegiate decision, falling to 0-1.
  • In addition to King, junior Reid Latham (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) had effective outings for the Judges. Each threw 1.2 innings, with Latham allowing two hits and striking out one, while King only gave up one hit and fanned two.
  • For the home team, 1B Luke Padian went 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBI, hitting a solo home run in the second to start the big frame.
  • Tristan Kim allowed just one hit over three innings for the Mammoths to earn the win in relief, improving to 3-0. He struck out three and walked one.

UP NEXT: The Judges head to St. Louis this weekend to meet Washington University for a four-game set starting on Friday at 3 p.m. Eastern (4 PM Central).
