Baseball closes series with a pair of losses was WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Brandeis University baseball team dropped two more contests today to close out their University Athletic Association series with Washington University. The Judges fell, 7-3 and 15-3, to the Bears.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 5-22, 1-11 UAA.
  • Washington U.: 25-8, 9-3 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE (WashU 7, Brandeis 3)

  • The Judges got their best pitching performance of the series from graduate student Marc Maestri (Katonah, NY / Somers), who went seven innings and allowed seven hits and six runs (five earned). He struck out six and walked three, taking the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season.
  • Brandeis opened the scoring in the top of the first when a wild pitch scored senior CF Sam Nugent (Mansfield, Mass. / Mansfield), who had singled to lead off the inning, but the Judges could not bring home senior SS Drew Michaud (Madison, Conn / Xavier), who had also singled.
  • The Bears broke through in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by LF Kaden Bernhard.
  • The big blow in the game was a grand slam in the fourth by CF Brandon Buday that came after two walks and a Brandeis error.
  • RF Broghan O'Connor added an RBI for the home team in the fifth to make it 6-1.
  • Brandeis cut into the lead in the seventh on an RBI hit by Griffin Bodow (Tempe, Ariz. / Tempe Prep) and an infielder grounder by first-year Jordan Greenaway (Clifton, NJ / Morristown Beard School) in the ninth, but an errant throw on a pickoff attempts in the eighth gave the hosts their final run of the day.
  • Bodow finished with a career-high three hits on the day, while junior Mike DiCenzo (Cranston, R.I. / Moses Brown) and senior Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif. / Palos Verde) each had two.
  • Buday and Branden Mazone each had two hits for the Bears, with Buday's slam delivering more than half of the team's offense.
  • Will Henkel improved to 7-1 on the season with 6.1 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on five hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO (WashU 15, Brandeis 3)

  • The Bears put game two away much quicker, scoring four times on just one hit in the first inning, including two bases-loaded walks and a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • Brandeis added single runs in the second and third on productive grounders by Matthew Motiwalla (South Orange, N.J. / Columbia High School) and Jordan Greenaway (Clifton, NJ / Morristown Beard School).
  • The Bears added two more runs in the fifth inning and closed things out in the seventh with eight runs on seven hits and a costly passed ball that made it 15-2.
  • DiCenzo got Brandeis on the board in the top of the seventh with an RBI double that accounted for the Judges' final run.
  • Isaac Zhang earned the win in relief for the Bears to improve to 1-1 on the season, while senior Christian Tejada (Providence, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) took the loss and falls to 0-2.
