WALTHAM, Mass. — Three Brandeis University student-athletes have been awarded recent University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors. Junior Rachel Rosman of Bonita Springs, Fla., was honored for women's tennis for the week ending April 4, while senior Chelsea Korp of Worcester, Mass., and junior Charles Sacks of Phoenix, Ariz., were recognized for softball and golf, respectively, for the week ending April 11.
Rosman, was unbeaten at No. 2 singles in a 1-2 week for the Judges. On April 1 in an 8-1 win over Babson, she cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, win. On April 2 against Wellesley, she again dominated, 6-0, 6-2, in a 7-2 loss for the Judges. Finally, she earned the team's only point against top-ranked Amherst College on April 3 with a three-set win, 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 in a super tie-breaker. Overall this season, Brandeis is ranked 28th in the nation, the program's first-ever national ranking, with an 8-7 record. The team faces Tufts University on April 13 before heading to the UAA championships over the weekend at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
Korp, a senior shortstop for the Brandeis softball team, hit .500 (8-for-16) with four RBI and five runs scored in a 5-1 week for the 21st-ranked Judges, reaching safely in five of six contests. She went 3-for-4 in an April 7 sweep of WPI, 10-1 and 12-4, scoring one run and driving in two with a stolen base. In 7-2 and 4-0 wins over Clark University on April 10, Korp went 4-for-6 with two RBI and three runs scored, including her first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the second inning of game one that proved to be the winning runs. In a split with Bowdoin College, she went 1-for-6 overall with a run scored. In the key three-run sixth inning of a 6-3 win in the opener, Korp singled, stole second and scored on a two-run single that highlighted the inning. She went 0-for-3 in the final game, a 2-0 loss. Overall this season, Brandeis owns a record of 18-5-1. Korp is second on the team with a .413 batting average, raising it 109 points over a recent eight-game hitting streak.
Sacks led the Brandeis golfers to a tie for sixth place in their opening tournament of the spring season, the UMass-Dartmouth Hampton Inn Invitational on April 10 and 11. Sacks finished in a tie with four others in 17th place with a score of 86-76-162 (+18). Sacks's round of 76 on day two was tied for the fifth-lowest on the day, while his 10-stroke improvement from the first day of action to the second gave him a 21-place improvement. Brandeis tied with Nichols College, as the two squads shot identical scores of 338-321-659, five strokes behind host UMass-Dartmouth, who was fifth.
Rosman is a 2007 graduate of Estero High School. She is the daughter of Jay and Cathy Rosman of Bonita Springs, Fla.
Korp is a 2006 graduate of Holy Name High School. She is the daughter of Arthur and Donna Korp, Worcester, Mass.
Sacks is a 2007 graduate of Jess Schwartz High School. He is the son of Erik and Marilena Sacks, Phoenix, Ariz.
