ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Brandeis University men's basketball
suffered an 83-65 loss in its University Athletic Association (UAA)
opener at the University of Rochester. The Judges, playing their
first game as a ranked team, fell behind by a 33-9 score 11 minutes
into the contest and trailed by as many as 32 points in the first
half. They got within 13 points in the second half, but the deficit
was too much to overcome.
Brandeis (10-2, 0-1 UAA) was unable to match the 1956-57 Judges for
the best 12-game start in school history. The Judges were led by
rookie reserves Kenny Small and Andre Roberson, who both had career
scoring highs with 15 and 13 points respectively. No other Brandeis
player had more than eight, with junior Steve DeLuca setting a
career-low with two points in just 14 minutes of action. Roberson
matched his career high with four assists, while three Brandeis
players tied for team-high honors with three caroms. The Judges
shot just 36 percent from the floor in the first half, but
rebounded to hit 47 percent from the floor in the second.
Rochester (8-2, 2-0) got head coach Mike Neer his 500th career win
thanks to balanced scoring that saw seven players score at least
eight points. Guard Jeff Juron led all players with 15 points on a
perfect shooting night. Juron went 5-5 from the floor, 1-1 from
3-point range and 4-4 from the free throw line. Jon Onyiriuka had
13 points for UR and Uche Ndubizu had 10. Onyiriuka led all players
with nine rebounds, while Tim Brackney hit a game-high seven
assists. The Yellowjackets won the battle of the boards, 35-25, and
outshot Brandeis, 58 percent to 43 percent.
