WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University senior guard Joe
Coppens of Rockland, Mass., was named to the University Athletic
Association (UAA) first team. Sophomore forward Terrell Hollins of
Springfield, Mass., earned a spot on the second-team All-UAA, while
senior forward Stephen Hill of Brighton, Mass., and junior guard
Kevin Olson of Rockport, Mass., both earned honorable mention.
Coppens, a 2007 UAA honorable mention, earned a first team All-UAA
spot for the first time of his career. He is currently ranked 23rd
on the Brandeis University all-time leading scorers list with 1,064
points through the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Coppens
also holds the fourth spot all-time for career 3-pointers with 145,
and is only the fifth person in school history to reach over 100
3-pointers.
Coppens leads the Judges in scoring with an average of 15.0 points
per game, good for seventh in the UAA. Coppens also holds top
conference rankings in field-goal percentage (48.6%, 11th)
free-throw percentage (87.1%, 2nd), 3-point field goal percentage
(43.8%, 5th) 3-point field goals per game (2.4, 4th) and steals per
game (1.48, 6th).
Hollins earned the first All-UAA honor of his career as a member
of the second team this season. He led the Judges in rebounds with
an average of 6.0 per game, good for ninth in the UAA. Hollins held
the second spot on the team in scoring, contributing 13.6 points
per game, good for 11th in the UAA. Hollins also earned a fifth
place spot in field goal percentage with 52.7%.
Hill finished second on the team with 5.1 rebounds per game and
fifth on the team with 7.6 points per game. Olson finished third
with 11.0 points per game, and ranked eighth in the UAA for
three-point field goals per game. Olson also ranks among the top
three-point performers in school history with 97, needing just
three more to become the seventh player all-time to reach the 100
mark.
Since taking on the Judges’ head coaching job in 2003, Brian
Meehan has taken the team to their second straight NCAA tournament
bid. Finishing the regular season with a 20-5 record and ranking
fifth in the country after the final poll, the Judges finished
second in the UAA with a 10-4 conference record. The Judges opened
up the first round of the NCAA tournament with a win over Lasell
College (80-59), and continued this momentum into the second round
with a win over Bowdoin College (68-53), giving the team its first
Sweet 16 bid in thirty years. The Judges head to Plattsburgh, N.Y.
to take on seventh-ranked Plattsburgh State on March 14.
Coppens is a 2004 graduate of Rockland High School. He is the son
Leo and Lynn Coppens, Rockland, Mass.
Hollins is a 2005 graduate of Longmeadow High School. He is the
son of James and Karen Hollins, Springfield, Mass.
Hill is a 2004 graduate of Catholic Memorial High School. He is
the son of David and Ingrid Hill, Brighton, Mass.
Olson is a 2005 graduate of Rockport High School. He is the son of
Richard and Nancy Olson, Rockport, Mass.
