WALTHAM, Mass. - Three Brandeis University student-athletes have earned University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors. Sophomore Anna Hanley of Medford, Mass., was selected for women's fencing for the third time this season. Junior Terrell Hollins of Springfield, Mass., earned the honor for men's basketball for the second time in his career, while sophomore Paul Norton of Amherst, Mass., of the men's indoor track and field team was recognized for the second time in 2008-09.
Hanley, a saber fencer who transferred from Sacred Heart University, led the Judges to a 3-1 record at the Brandeis Invitational on Dec. 7. The Judges had four one-point matches, defeating Cornell, Brown and St. John's by 14-13 marks and losing to Yale by the same score. Hanley had the team's best all-around effort, going 10-2 overall and leading the saber squad to wins over Cornell (8-1) and Yale (6-3). Hanley was 3-0 in those matches and 2-1 against Brown and St. John's.
Hollins, a forward who is one of four team captains, guided the Judges to a 3-0 week, improving their record to 4-3 overall after an 0-3 start. Overall last week, he averaged 18.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, four assists and two steals per game, setting three career-highs in the process. Hollins opened the week with 10 points and two rebounds in 20 minutes against Babson in a 70-60 win on Dec. 2. In a 75-61 win over No. 25 Rhode Island College on Dec. 4, Hollins led all players with 18 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists, the last two career-bests. Finally, in a 97-70 win at Emerson College on Dec. 6, Hollins recorded his second-straight double-double with a career-high 27 points along with 14 rebounds and four assists. He shot 11-17 (.647) from the field and 5-6 (.833) from the line against Lions. Overall for the week, Hollins connected on 53.7 percent from the floor (22-41) and 68.8 percent from the line (11-16).
Norton, a sophomore who previously earned All-UAA and All-New England honors in the cross country season, earned a win in the 5,000-meter run at the Northeastern Husky Invitational, an unscored meet that was the Judges' first of the season. His time of 15:08.47 bested the runner-up - an unattached competitor - by five seconds and was 43 seconds ahead of the next collegiate runner.
Hanley is a 2007 graduate of Lexington Christian Academy. She is the daughter of Tim and Terry Hanley, Medford, Mass.
Hollins is a 2005 graduate of Longmeadow High School. He is the son of James Hollins and Karen Hollins, Springfield, Mass.
Norton is a 2007 graduate of Amherst Regional High School. He is the son of David and Claire Norton, Amherst, Mass.
