WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University had four players honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA) on the 2013 All-UAA team. Junior guard Gabriel Moton of St. Petersburg, Fla., was a first-team selection, while classmate forward Alex Stoyle of Goffstown, N.H., was named to the second team. Juniors Youri Dascy of Fall River, Mass., and Ben Bartoldus of Hillsborough, N.H., were honorable mentions.
Moton, a transfer from Boston College, led the Judges in scoring (14.5 ppg), rebounding (5.7 rpg) and assists this season (4.0 apg), one of only three players in the UAA to accomplish the feat. He finished seventh in the UAA in scoring, 10th in rebounding and fourth in assists. Moton was the team's leading scorer in 11 games, their leading rebounder eight times and had the squad's top assist total 15 times.
Moton scored in double figures in 21 of the Judges 24 contests, scoring 20 points or more four times. He also recorded a team-high four double-doubles on the campaign, tied for second in the conference. Moton's 28 points on Nov. 24 against Tufts tied for the Judges' season-high performance, while his 12 rebounds on Dec. 29 against Bates and his four six-assist performances were each one shy of the team's best performance of the season. In UAA play, he had 17 points and a key 3-pointer to help defeat eventual conference champions Washington University, 67-62, in St. Louis on Jan. 20.
Stoyle averaged 9.7 points per game, fourth on the team (22nd in the UAA), and finished second in rebounding at 5.2 board per game (12th in the UAA). His 14 blocked shots were also second on the team. In UAA play, he led the team in rebounding (4.8 rpg) and was second in scoring at 10.9 points per game. Stoyle had 10 games scoring in double figures and two double-digit rebounding games, leading the team in scoring three times and in rebounds four times.
In one three-game stretch, he scored 27 points in a win over Emory, 15 in a loss to Rochester and 28 in a win over Chicago – matching the squad's season best – hitting 24-of-31 shots (77.4%) from the field and 11-of-16 from 3-point range (68.8%) in that span. He also pulled down 13 rebounds against Emory for his first career double-double.
Dascy was named an All-UAA honorable mention for the third year in a row. He was the squad's third-leading scorer at 9.8 points per game (21st in the UAA). Dascy also led the team in field goal percentage for the third year in a row, placing sixth in the UAA at 52.7% (97-184), while finishing third in rebounding (4.4 rpg). He will enter his senior season ranked third on Brandeis's career field-goal percentage list at 56.1 percent (315-561) and seventh with 58 blocked shots.
Bartoldus finished the season as Brandeis's second-leading scorer. He averaged 10.1 points per game before suffering a season-ending injury with four games to go in the regular season. He was also the team's fourth-leading rebounder (3.0 rpg). He scored in double figures in 10 of the 20 full games he played, including a pair of 20-point performances in games against UAA co-champions Rochester and Emory. Bartoldus needs 10 3-pointers next season to become the 12 player in school history with 100 for his career.
In head coach Brian Meehan's 10th season on the sidelines, the Brandeis men finished the 2012-13 season with a 17-8 record, 8-6 in the UAA, good for fourth place. The Judges started the campaign at 14-2, reaching No. 19 in the nation in the d3hoops.com national poll. The Judges stumbled a bit down the stretch, playing without at least two of their top five players in the final five games of the season due to injury and illness.
