Men roll past Curry, 88-60, behind 17 from Vilmont

Waltham, Mass. - Junior guard Robinson Vilmont (Cambridge, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) led the way with 17 points as the Brandeis University men's basketball team defeated Curry College, 88-60, in the season opener.

Vilmont connected on three of five three-pointers and went 6-for-7 from the free throw line.

Sophomore forward Jordan Cooper (Weston, Fla./ Sagemont School) scored 14 points and six rebounds and junior center John Powell (Ashland, Mass./Brimmer and May) added 13 points and six boards for the Judges.  Sophomore forward Latye Workman (Brooklyn, N.Y./ Bedford Academy) recorded a game-high five blocks and eight points off the Brandeis bench, which outscored their Curry counterparts, 28-13.

Senior point guard Colby Smith (No. Andover, Mass./ No. Andover) dished out a game-high four assists.

Junior guard Trey Jones scored a game-high 21 and junior forward James Pina added 12 for the Colonels.

Brandeis took the lead for good on a layup by Powell with 10:27 left to play in the first half, making it 17-15 in favor of the home team. That started a 12-0  run by the Judges, who led 37-20 after the first half.  Powell scored 11 of his 13 points in that half.

In the second half,  the Judges led by as many as 36  on a triple by freshman Ian Roach (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bedford Acad.)  that made it 72-36 with 8:37 to play. The Colonels responded with a 16-0 run, in which Jones had seven points and two steals, but Cooper ended it with a pull-up jumper followed by a one-handed dunk in transition off a feed from Smith, energizing the crowd.

Brandeis is now 15-0 all-time against Curry.

The Judges' next game is Wednesday, Nov. 18 at UMass Dartmouth.
