WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University men's basketball senior Latye Workman (Brooklyn. N.Y./Bedford Academy) finished with 15 points and a career-high 18 rebounds tonight as the Judges rallied past visiting Newbury College, 75-62, in a non-conference showdown in Red Auerbach Arena. Brandeis improves to 2-5 on the season, while Newbury falls to 1-5.
Brandeis struggled offensively in the first half, shooting just 9-for-38 overall (23.7%) and just 3-for-23 from 3-point range (13.0%) as they trailed, 30-23. Newbury hit 10-of-33 from the field (30.3%) and 6-of-22 from deep (27.3%) to build their seven-point lead.
In the second stanza, the Judges' offense found its range, as they matched their first-half scoring output in the first eight minutes of the half. Newbury also started off quickly, establishing a 10-point lead on a Daivon Edwards 3-pointer that made it 38-28 just over 90 seconds in.
The Judges rattled off 12 of the game's next 14 points. They reclaimed the lead on a layup by rookie guard Lawrence Sabir (Providence, R.I./Lasalle Academy) and matched their 23 first-half points on a put-back by sophomore Collin Sawyer (New London, Conn. / New London) at the 12:29 mark that made it 46-40 in favor of Brandeis.
Newbury would score the next five points of the game, but Workman converted a traditional three-point play to stop the momentum. The Judges scored three on their next two trips on trifectas by sophomore Eric D'Aguanno (Saunderstown, R.I./St. Andrews School) and Sawyer to make it 55-45 with 10:24 to go and they never looked back. Brandeis led by as many as 15 points in the final 10 minutes before the final 13-point advantage.
Workman finished with 15 points, one shy of his career-best, while his 18 rebounds were the most in a game by a Brandeis player since Terrell Hollins '10 grabbed 21 in a game. Eight of Workman's 18 boards came on the offensive glass – nearly three times the output of the entire Nighthawk roster. As a team, Brandeis had a 19-3 margin in offensive rebounds, leading to a 21-0 whitewash in second-chance points.
The Judges' leading scorer on the night was senior Nate Meehan (Lowell, Mass./Phillips Andover), who scored 16 points – 10 in the first half – including five 3-pointers. Sawyer also added 15 points off the bench, a new career-high. Sabir finished one basket and one assist shy of a triple-double, notching eight points and career-highs with nine assists and 10 rebounds. He also had three steals on the night.
For Newbury, Jeduan Langston also reached a double-double, with a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. He also dished seven assists to lead the Nighthawks. Edwards finished with 13 points and four assists for the visitors, while Cameron Deiley hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points. Ato Botsio added six rebounds for Newbury, but no other NC player had more than four.
Brandeis will close out the semester on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wesleyan University. Newbury is at Clark University the same day for a 2 p.m. tipoff
