LEWISTON, Maine  (taken from a Bates College press release) -- The Brandeis University men's basketball team got a pair of double-double performances today to rebound from three-point halftime deficit to defeat host Bates College, 54-48, in Alumni Gym today. The Judges improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 0-1.

Sophomore Chandler Jones (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Commonwealth Academy) and grad student Latye Workman (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bedford Academy) both registered their first double-doubles of the season for the Judges, with Jones tallying 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and Workman finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. It was the third double-double of Jones's career and the fourth for Workman.

Bates Junior Jeff Spellman (Boston, Mass.) led all scorers with 12 points in a game that proved to be a defensive struggle.

Senior captain Max Hummel (Glastonbury, Conn.) chipped in 11 points on 5-9 shooting for Bates, while Brandeis sophomore Collin Sawyer (New London, Conn./New London) scored 11 points on 4-7 shooting for the Judges. Bobcat junior Nick Gilpin (Hampden, Maine) added six points, a team-high eight rebounds and three assists.

Neither team could really get going from the field, with Brandeis shooting 39.2% (20-51) from the floor and Bates finishing 19-60 (31.7%) on the evening.

With 4:46 remaining in the game, first-year Andrew Snoddy (Stow, Mass.) made a layup to tie the game at 45. Then with 4:22 left, Workman drew a foul and sank both free throws to give Brandeis the lead for good.

Bates still trailed by just two points with 1:04 remaining in the game when Jones drove the ball to the hoop, finishing strong and drawing the foul. He made the free throw to extend the Brandeis lead to five points at 50-45. The Judges made enough free throws down the stretch to secure the win over Bates.

The Bobcats led 27-24 at halftime thanks to eight first-half points from Hummel and seven from Spellman. Bates trailed 24-23 with less than a minute left before Hummel made a layup and junior Kody Greenhalgh (Warwick, R.I.) knocked down a jumper to extend the lead to three. Neither team led by more than eight points throughout the game. Bates held its largest lead of five points with 7:15 left in the first half after senior captain Eli Frater (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made a layup on an assist from Gilpin.

Bates held Jones scoreless in the first half, but the sophomore took over in the second, leading all scorers down the stretch with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Judges return to action on Monday evening at 7 p.m. when they play host to Lasell College.
