Men's basketball suffers 64-58 loss to Bowdoin

WALTHAM, Mass. – The visiting Bowdoin College men's basketball team held host Brandeis to just two field goals over a seven minute stretch as the Polar Bears came back from an 11-point deficit to defeat the Judges, 64-58, in a non-conference showdown in Red Auerbach Arena today. Each team's record now stands at 7-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Brandeis outscored Bowdoin, 32-23, in the first half, closing on a 6-0 run in the final 1:13 to take their nine-point lead. Junior Eric D'Aguanno (Saunderstown, R.I./St. Andrews School) led all scorers with 10 points off the bench in the first.
• The teams traded hoops early in the second half, with Brandeis maintaining its nine-point advantage at 44-35 when sophomore Chandler Jones (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Commonwealth Academy) made a lay-up with 10:59 on the clock.
• Bowdoin began its run at that point, going on a 10-2 run to get within one point a 3-pointer by senior Jack Simonds (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) with 8:15 to go.
• Brandeis got a lay-up from sophomore Lawrence Sabir (Providence, R.I./LaSalle Academy) out of a timeout at the 7:43 mark, but after both teams missed, Simonds connected from deep again to tie the game at 48-all.
• After another miss by the Judges, Simonds got a rebounds and scored on the fast break to put the visitors ahead, 50-48, and they would not trail again.
• Bowdoin pushed the lead to five on a traditional three-point play by senior Jack Bors (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) with 5:22 to go.
• Brandeis rookie Nolan Hagerty (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) answered with a hook shot, and D'Aguanno connected from deep after a couple of offensive rebounds, making it 53-53 with 3:26 left. The Judges would only hit one more field goal, a 3-pointer late in the game, the rest of the way.
• Bowdoin reclaimed the lead for good on a Stephen Ferraro (New Providence, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) lay-up, and a corner 3 from Simonds pushed the lead back to five at 58-53 with 2:29 left.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

• D'Aguanno led the Judges with 16 points for the game. He hit 6-of-13 overall and 4-of-10 from deep. He also pulled down six rebounds for the second game in a row.
• Also scoring in double digits were senior Corey Sherman (Penn Valley, Pa./Lower Merion), who had 15, nine in the first half, and Jones, who had seven in the first 20 minutes.
• Hagerty had one of the best games of his young career, with team- and career-highs of nine rebounds and four assists. He logged a career-best 20 minutes.
• For Bowdoin, Simonds led the way with a game-high 27 points, 21 coming during the team's second-half comeback. He was 8-of-16 overall, 5-of-8 from beyond the arc and 6-of-7 from the line for the game. All of his 3-pointers came in the second half, when he hit 5-of-7.
• Senior Hugh O'Neil (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) also had a big game and second half. He finished with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, with a second-half double-double of 10 points and 10 boards.
• For the game, Bowdoin outshot Brandeis, 45.5% (25-55) to 36.1% (22-61), including 51.7% (15-29) to 26.5% (9-34) in the second half.
• Rebounds were even at 37-all, with Brandeis outscoring Bowdoin, 14-7, in second-chance points.
• Though the Judges held a slim edge in turnovers, 12-10, Brandeis was able to turn that into a 16-4 advantage in points off those miscues.
