Men off to best start since 2010 with 85-66 win at Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's basketball team put four players in double figures today as the Judges led wire-to-wire in an 85-66 victory at local rivals Lasell University. With the win, the Judges are off to their best start since 2010.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis, 4-0.
  • Lasell, 2-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges scored nine of the game's first 11 points in just over two minutes of action, with four different Brandeis players contributing to the run.
  • Brandeis went ahead by as many as 20 points in the first after junior Ryan Power (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) hit a lay-up with 5:20 left to make it 44-24.
  • Lasell ended the half on a 13-5 run to cut their deficit to 49-37.
  • Brandeis built their lead by shooting 66% from the field (21-32) and 56% from 3-point range (5-9) while holding the Lasers to 43% (15-35) and 18% (2-11), respectively.
  • The hosts were able to get within seven points just under five minutes into the second half after a Brandeis turnover led to a Gabe Qua lay-up that made it 57-50 with 15:22 left in the game.
  • The Judges responded by scoring the game's next 10 points, with 3-pointers by sophomore Toby Harris (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) and first-year Quron Zene (Windsor, Conn. / IMG Acad.) helping push the lead back 17 five minutes later.
  • Brandeis led by as many as 21 points in the second half before the final 19-point margin of victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Brandeis put four players in double figures in scoring for the second game in a row. Harris led the way with 24 points, his fourth-straight game with more than 20. He hit 9-of-12 from the field, 5-of-7 from 3-point range and one free throw. Harris also grabbed nine rebounds.
  • Power added 15 points, shooting 7-of-10 from the field and 1-of-3 from downtown. ]
  • First-year Ethan Edwards (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Woodstock Acad.) came off the bench and scored 13 points while dishing out a team-high four assists.
  • Zene rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points and a career-high 11 points for the Judges' first double-double of the season.
  • The Lasers were paced by 21 points and seven rebounds from Quinton Partee, Jr., and 15 points from Marcus Lewis.
  • Brandeis held Lasell's EJ Day, who averaged 33.7 points per game over the Lasers' first three games to just 11 points, but Day dished out 11 assists and had five steals in the game.
  • Brandeis finished the game outshooting Lasell, 52% to 41% while hitting 10 3-pointers to the Lasers' five.
  • The Judges outrebounded Lasell, 41-25, including 13-8 on the offensive glass.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Judges' last 4-0 start came in 2010 when they tied a school record with an 11-0 start. It's their best start under head coach  Jean Bain.
  • Day entered the game ranked third in Division III in scoring, while Harris was tied for 26th.
