Men's fencing drops three close matches at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. -- In their first home competition of the season, the Brandeis men's fencing team came up a tad short against a pair of Ivy League opponents and another national powerhouse. The Judges fell to Brown, 16-11; Yale, 17-10; and St. John's, 15-12.

In their first match of the day, the men dropped a 16-11 decision to Brown University, despite a 5-4 win in the epee. After dropping the first three bouts, the squad rallied to win five of the last six. Four different fencers earned points for the Judges in the match, with senior Damien Lehfeldt (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) going 2-1.

Next up for the Judges was Yale University. The saber squad earned Brandeis's second weapon victory of the day, going 6-3 in the 17-10 loss. Sophomore Jon Rollock (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) was the top performern in the win, taking all three of his bouts, including a pair of 5-2 victories. Classmate Adam Austin (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) went 2-1.

The last match of the day was the closest, although the Brandeis squads could not pick up a win. The Judges fell to St. John's 15-12, with all three weapons going to the Red Storm by 5-4 marks. Austin had two saber victories, while senior Will Friedman (Newton, Mass./Newton North) had two in the foil and Lehfeldt had two in the epee.
