Men's fencing goes 1-3 with win over Brown at 2009 Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University fencing team hosted the first of its two events of the 2009-10 season today, the Brandeis Invitational. Facing some of their toughest competition of the season, the Judges struggled. The Brandeis men opened with a 14-13 win over Brown University, but the Judges were unable to pull out any more victories, finishing 1-3.

The highlight of the day for Brandeis came in the very first match against Brown. The Judges took the saber, 5-4, and the epee, 6-3, but the match came down to the final bouts in foil. Needing to win two of the last three, rookie Jason Lefenfeld (Beverly, Mass./St. Johns Prep) gave the Judges a 13-12 lead with a 5-2 win. After the Bears tied it at 13, sophomore Sean Norton (Leonia, N.J./Dwight-Englewood) earned a 5-3 victory in the last match, giving the Judges the win. Juniors Jon Rollock (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) and Adam Austin (Dix Hills, N.Y./Commack) earned a pair of wins in saber action, while all three senior epee competitors – Will Bedor (Rego Park, N.Y./Francis Lewis), Alex Clos (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) and Andrew Travis (Taunton, Mass./Bristol-Plymouth) went 2-1 as well.

The epee squad continued its success throughout the day, going 7-2 in losses to St. John's (12-15) and Yale (10-17). Sophomore Alex Powell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Monclair) went 2-0 and senior Jared Shackleford (Arlington, Texas/homeschooled) went 2-1 against the Red Storm, while Powell also put together a 3-0 record against the Bulldogs. In a loss to North Carolina, the closest weapon was the saber, where the Tar Heels won, 5-4, despite a 2-1 mark from Rollock.
