Three fencers claim UAA Athlete of the Week honors, Nov. 24

WALTHAM, Mass. – Three Brandeis University fencers have been named University Athletic Association (UAA) Fencers of the Week for Nov. 23. Juniors Ashley Jean of Norwood, Mass., and Nina Sayles of Mamaroneck, N.Y., were honored for the women, while sophomore Kyle Berney was recognized for the men.

Jean and Sayles were co-recipients for the Brandeis women as they posted identical 14-2 records for an undefeated sabre squad at the first of two Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) meets at Brown University on Saturday, Nov. 21. As a team, the Brandeis women went 6-0, with wins over varsity opponents Sacred Heart University (18-9), MIT (15-12) and Wellesley (18-9). The wins both avenged Northeast Conference losses from the 2014-15 season. The Judges also defeated club teams from Massachusetts (25-2), Boston University (24-3) and New Hampshire (27-0).

This is the fifth career UAA Fencer of the Week honor for Jean and the third for Sayles. Both were named Northeast Fencing Conference All-Stars in 2013.

Berney earned UAA Weekly honors for the second time this season. His first came when he earned a silver medal in the sabre at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Fall Invitational on Nov. 7. This weekend at Brown, he posted a team-high in victories, going 11-2. Brandeis defeated Sacred Heart, 14-13, and MIT, 15-12, in varsity matches. The Judges tied with SHU as Northeast Conference co-champions in 2014-15, while their win over MIT avenges a loss from the 2014-15 season. Brandeis also defeated club squads from UMass (25-2), BU (24-3) and UNH (27-0). Berney was an All-NFC second-team selection as a freshman last year.

Jean is a 2013 graduate of Fontbonne Academy.

Sayles is a 2013 graduate of Loomis Chaffee School.

Berney is a 2014 graduate of Caddo Magnet School.
