CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brandeis fencing teams each split their six matches today at the 2019 Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by MIT. The men now stand at 16-12 overall this season, while the women are 16-16.
Overall, the teams each defeated Yeshiva, Hunter and Haverford, while falling to Stevens Tech, NYU and NJIT.

The Judges had a couple of close calls among their six losses. In the men's 14-13 loss to Stevens, sabre won 7-2 and foil won 5-4, but the Ducks' 8-1 edge in epee clinched the win. The women also won two of three weapons against Stevens, 6-3 in saber and 5-4 in epee, but a sabre sweep carried the day for the Ducks. For the women against NJIT, the teams split 5-4 decisions in foil, which went to Brandeis and sabre, which went to NJIT, but the Highlanders were 6-3 winners in epee.
In the annual UAA showdown with NYU, the Violets prevailed in both showdowns. For the men, NYU swept all three weapons by 7-2 scores to take a 21-6 decision. For the women, it was a 6-3 win for epee, but foil was edged, 5-4, while sabre fell, 7-2.
The Judges did have a pair of runaway victories, with the women blanking Yeshiva, 27-0, and the men taking a 25-2 win over the Macabees. Against Hunter, the men were 23-4 victors and the women won 25-2.
The top squad on the day was the women's epee, who won five of their six matchups. Sophomore Madeleine Vibert (Las Vegas, Nev. / West Career and Tech. Academy) led the squad with a 13-3 record, while junior Dakota Levy put together a 12-5 record. Women's foil went 4-2, with senior Joanne Carminucci (Brewster, N.Y./North Salem) posting the team's best overall record at 16-2, while junior Jessica Gets (Marlborough, N.J./Marlborough) was 15-3. Rookie Jada Harrison (Jericho, N.Y./Jericho) led the sabre squad to a 3-3 record with nine wins.
On the men's side, sabre went 4-2 to lead the way. Senior Leon Rotenstein (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) posted a 9-5 record in five matches, while three others tied with seven wins each, including junior Shawn Pyatetsky (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn), who lost only twice. Men's foil went 3-3 with a balanced lineup that saw six different fencers contributed between four and six wins. Men's epee was also 3-3, with junior Chris Armstrong (Highland Park, Ill.Highland Park) pacing the squad with an 11-6 record, the most wins of any male for the Judges at the meet.
The Judges close out the regular season dual meet schedule when they host BC, MIT and Harvard for the Beanpot Tournament on February 13th at 6 p.m.
