WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men’s
soccer team scored three second-half goals to blow open a tight
contest as the Judges downed WPI, 4-0, in a non-conference contest,
Brandeis’s first on their newly-renovated A-Turf surface on
Gordon Field.
Brandeis (4-0) got all the scoring they would need just under six
minutes into the game. University Athletic Association (UAA)
Offensive Co-Player of the Week Ben Premo (Florence, Mass.) was
hauled down from behind in the box with 5:57 gone from the clock.
Senior back Shelton Stewart (Clarendon, Jamaica) calmly deposited
the penalty shot into the right corner to tie Premo for the team
lead with his fourth goal of the season. The Judges got off six
more shots in the half, but several went just wide of the net.
WPI (1-2) put on some early pressure in the second half, but Judge
junior Mike Snyder (Ashby, Mass.) gave the Judges some breathing
room in the 56th minute as Stewart launched a long ball two-thirds
of the way down the field. Premo ran it down and fed Snyder who
scored his second goal of the season.
Premo then reclaimed the team goal-scoring lead in the 62nd minute
as junior Jordan Skolnik (Mansfield Center, Conn.) sent a ball from
the left side of the box to Snyder, who one-timed it to the rookie
forward and Premo found the back of the net for the fifth time in
2005. Junior midfielder Yoni Litwok (Marlboro, N.J.) closed out the
scoring in the 70th minute when he ran down a ball played from the
backfield by sophomore David Weinstein (Holden, Mass.) and chipped
it over the WPI goalkeeper.
Brandeis netminders Pat Makridakis (Mendon, Mass.) and Jake Knoll
(Gardner, Mass.) made seven saves for the second shutout of the
season by the Judges. WPI senior Matthew Cichon (Somerset, Mass.)
had nine stops for the Engineers in the losing effort.
With his three points today, Stewart now has 97 for his career.
With three more points, he will become just the fourth 100-point
scorer in Brandeis history.
The Judges next take on local rivals Babson College in Wellesley on
Saturday at 1 p.m., while WPI heads to cross-town rival Clark at
2:30 p.m. the same day.
