NEWARK, N.J. -- Rookie midfielder Billy Murphy (Springfield,
Mass.) scored his second game-winning goal of the season 6:59 into
the first overtime today as the Brandeis University men's soccer
team upset nationally-ranked NYU, 2-1, in the University Athletic
Association (UAA) regular-season finale for both teams at the New
Jersey Institute of Technology.
Brandeis (10-7-3, 2-5-0 UAA) clinched its first 10-win season since
2002 thanks to Murphy's heroics in the first extra session.
Sophomore Ben Premo (Florence, Mass.) recorded his second assist of
the game and ninth of the season when his cross freed Murphy to get
past his defender.
NYU (13-3-2, 4-2-1 UAA), the No. 20 team in the nation according to
d3kicks.com and No. 21 in the NSCAA poll, jumped out to an early
lead as Neal Branden collected his own rebound follwing a corner
kick at the 9:55 mark.
The Judges answered nine minutes and two seconds later as senior
back Scott Zackaroff (Bath, Ohio) punched home a rebound after
Premo's initial shot hit the crossbar. NYU had the better of the
play after the Judges tied it up, outshooting Brandeis by a 20-6
margin, but rookie goalkeeper Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.)
stopped seven shots on goal, including the Violets' first attempt
of overtime. The Brandeis defense also cleared three different
balls off the line throughout the game.
