Men's soccer downs NYU, 2-1, in overtime for second conference win over a nationally-ranked foe

NEWARK, N.J. -- Rookie midfielder Billy Murphy (Springfield, Mass.) scored his second game-winning goal of the season 6:59 into the first overtime today as the Brandeis University men's soccer team upset nationally-ranked NYU, 2-1, in the University Athletic Association (UAA) regular-season finale for both teams at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Brandeis (10-7-3, 2-5-0 UAA) clinched its first 10-win season since 2002 thanks to Murphy's heroics in the first extra session. Sophomore Ben Premo (Florence, Mass.) recorded his second assist of the game and ninth of the season when his cross freed Murphy to get past his defender.

NYU (13-3-2, 4-2-1 UAA), the No. 20 team in the nation according to d3kicks.com and No. 21 in the NSCAA poll, jumped out to an early lead as Neal Branden collected his own rebound follwing a corner kick at the 9:55 mark.

The Judges answered nine minutes and two seconds later as senior back Scott Zackaroff (Bath, Ohio) punched home a rebound after Premo's initial shot hit the crossbar. NYU had the better of the play after the Judges tied it up, outshooting Brandeis by a 20-6 margin, but rookie goalkeeper Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.) stopped seven shots on goal, including the Violets' first attempt of overtime. The Brandeis defense also cleared three different balls off the line throughout the game.
