Quick first half goals stand up as men's soccer tops MIT, 2-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis men's soccer team scored twice in a span of less than two minutes today and made the margin hold up, giving the Judges a 2-0 non-conference victory over MIT on Gordon Field.

Brandeis (5-3-2) picked up their first home win of the season after three overtime contests (one tie and two losses) thanks to senior Evan Duval's (Wilbraham, Mass.) three-point performance. Duval headed home a cross from rookie Steve Keucharian (Watertown, Mass.) at the 13:47 mark. At the 15:24 mark, Duval streaked down the left sideline and crossed a ball to the middle. Keucharian headed it along to sophomore midfielder Alex Zenerovitz (Acton, Mass.), who knocked it home for this second tally of the campaign.

MIT (5-4-1) increased its pressure in the second half, opening the stanza with a flurry. The Engineers outshot Brandeis, 11-4, after intermission, including a 5-1 margin in the first 10 minutes. Judges sophomore keeper Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.) was solid in net, though, making five saves in the second and six overall for his third shutout of the campaign. Engineer junior Tom Caldwell (E. Berlin, Pa.) had two stops in the losing effort.

Brandeis, which earned head coach Mike Coven his 397th career win, will head to Cleveland on Saturday to take on seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University in a University Athletic Association match-up at 1 p.m., while MIT is off until next Thursday when they play Johnson and Wales University at 7 p.m.
