WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University sophomore forward Mike Silberstein (Shrewsbury, N.J.) scored two goals tonight to lead the Judges past visiting Newbury College, 3-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match on Gordon Field. With the win Brandeis head coach Mike Coven moved two wins shy of becoming the 10th coach in Division III history with 400 career victories.

Brandeis (6-4-2) got all the scoring they would need in the eighth minute. Senior forward Evan Duval (Wilbraham, Mass.) sent a deep ball that rookie midfielder Stephen Kostel (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) ran down on the end line. Kostel used one touch to cross it to Silberstein, who chipped it into the side of the net.

The Judges doubled the lead at the 25:01 mark when junior forward Ben Premo (Florence, Mass.) sent a perfect through ball the freed Silberstein for his second goal of the game. It was his first career multi-goal game. Brandeis added a third goal just 3:10 later. Newbury (4-7-0) junior goalkeeper Brian Picanco (Lowell, Mass.) made a nice diving save on a Premo shot, but junior midfielder Alex Mithoefer (Chappaqua, N.Y.) pounced on the rebound for his third goal of the season. Premo's second assist of the game and fourth of the season put him alone in 10th place on the Judges' all-time scoring list with 74 career points.

Picanco kept his team in the game, making 14 saves in the losing effort as Brandeis outshot the Nighthawks, 28-6. He made seven saves in each half. Brandeis rookie goalie Dave Zieja (Holyoke, Mass.) needed just one stop to record a shutout in his first collegiate start.

Brandeis is next in action Friday night at 5 p.m. when they take on the University of Chicago in a University Athletic Association match-up. Newbury hosts UMaine-Presque Isle Sunday at 2 p.m.
