WALTHAM, Mass. – The rainy weather contributed to all
three goals today, including the game-winner with just 1:21 left in
regulation as the visiting New York University Violets defeated
host Brandeis University, 2-1, in University Athletic Association
men's soccer action on Gordon Field.
NYU (13-4-1, 4-3-0 UAA) opened the scoring in the 14th minute.
Brandeis sophomore goalie Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.) went
to play a ball wide of the net, but Violet junior forward Adam
Dhanens (Bakersfield, Calif.) got there first Dhanens poked it in
front of the net, where junior midfielder Adam Keller (East Lyme,
Conn.) buried for his fourth goal of the season.
Brandeis (8-9-3, 0-5-1 UAA), despite outshooting NYU, 7-4, in the
first half, didn't get on the board until the 53rd minute. Judge
sophomore midfielder Corey Bradley (Holyoke, Mass.) sent a cross
that appeared to be an easy catch for NYU junior Chris Wright
(Colchester, Conn.), but it slipped through his hands. Brandeis
sophomore Alex Zenerovitz (Acton, Mass.) was there to head the ball
into the empty net for his third tally of the season.
NYU had the better of the play in the second half with the wind at
their back, as Bracken's normally booming punts and goal kicks were
knocked down before crossing midfield. The Violets, who had missed
reclaiming the lead earlier on a defensive save by Brandeis senior
Joe Levitan (Baltimore, Md.), finally broke through in the 89th
minute. With a loose ball in front of the net and several players
on the ground, rookie midfielder Michael Burke (Islip, N.Y.)
averted overtime with his first collegiate goal.
Bracken and Wright each made five saves in net for their sides.
