Brandeis men play third straight OT game, fall to UR, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – For the third time in as many games and fifth time overall this season, the Brandeis University men's soccer team went to overtime tonight, but it was the University of Rochester Yellowjackets who emerged victorious, 2-1, on Gordon Field in the University Athletic Association (UAA) opener for both teams.

Rochester (6-2-1, 1-0 UAA) got on the board early on an own goal in the 10th minute. Following a corner kick taken by senior Nick Mikolenko (Fairport, N.Y.), a Brandeis defender deflected the ball into his own net to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

Brandeis (3-3-2, 0-1 UAA) responded just under five minutes before halftime, taking advantage of a UR error. A Rochester player headed the ball back for sophomore goalie Michael Peacock (Pittsford, N.Y.), but judge junior midfielder Alex Mithoefer (Chappaqua, N.Y.) beat Peacock to the ball and chipped it home for his second tally of the season to knot the game at 1-1.

Rochester had the better of the play in the second half and overtime, outshooting the Judges by a 12-2 margin. Brandeis sophomore keeper Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.) made five stops in that span, but the Yellowjackets broke through 6:42 into overtime. Sophomore midfielder Timmer McCarthy (W. Des Moines, Iowa) shot the ball off the post, but senior back Bobby Milenovici (Flushing, N.Y.) pounced on the rebound to notch his first goal of the season.

Bracken ended the contest with eight saves, and the Judges also had one team save, in the losing effort. Peacock made three stops for the victory. Rochester owned a 17-6 edge in shots and 5-3 in corner kicks.

Brandeis is next in action when they head to Colby-Sawyer College on Monday at 4 p.m., while Rochester kicks off a four-match homestand against RIT Tuesday at 7 p.m.
