Men's soccer falls to No. 21 WashU, 2-0

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Brandeis University men's soccer team dropped its second straight University Athletic Association (UAA) home game today as the Judges fell to Washington University, the No. 21 team in the nation, by a 2-0 score.

Washington (10-3-0, 3-1-0 UAA) got all the scoring they needed in the 29th minute. Junior Kellen Hayes (Haworth, N.J.), who checked into the game just 30 seconds earlier, took a feed from junior Eric Hill (Great Falls, Va.) and buried it for his fourth goal of the season. The Bears doubled their lead in the 51st minute. After the ball bounced around off several players' heads, sophomore Nat Zenner (Evanston, Ill.) settled and blasted it home from just outside the box for his fourth tally of the season.

Brandeis (6-6-2, 0-4-0 UAA), which was outshot in the first half, 12-2, increased their pressure in the second half, putting four of their eight shots on goal, but the Judges were unable get past a stingy WashU defense and sophomore netminder John Smelcer (St. Louis, Mo.). Smelcer had five saves for his fifth shutout of the season and the team's eighth overall. Brandeis sophomore goalie Taylor Bracken (No. Andover, Mass.) made a season-high 11 stops in the losing effort.

Brandeis is back in action on Wednesday night in a non-conference showdown at Springfield College at 7:00 p.m.
