WALTHAM, Mass. -In their season and career finale, Brandeis seniors Corey Bradley (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) and Jaime Batista (Westford, Mass./Westford Acad.) connected for a goal in the final three minutes, but it wasn't enough to rally the Judges, as they dropped a 3-2 decision to UAA rival NYU. NYU's Brandon Hintz (London, England/American School of London) had two goals, while sophomore midfielder Adam Fein (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) added a pair of assists.
Hintz opened the scoring in the 27th minute. After a long NYU free kick was sent into the box, a Brandeis defender attempted to clear with his head. The ball went straight to Hintz, who turned and blasted it into the upper left from about 20 yards out.
Brandeis got an equalizer in the 52nd minute. The play started with a nice ball played to the corner by rookie midfielder Lee Russo (Westford, Mass./Westford Acad.). Classmate Sam Ocel (No. Attleboro, Mass./No. Attleboro) ran it down and put on a move to evade a defender. Ocel's initial shot was stopped by NYU senior netminder Marek Urbanski (Burlingame, Calif./Mills), but Ocel followed his shot and tapped it into an open net.
The Violets scored the game's next two goals in similar fashion thanks to Fein. In the 67th minute, he carried the ball to the end line and sent a ball across the goal-mouth. NYU rookie forward Kyle Green (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) beat Judge junior goalkeeper Matt Lynch (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) to the spot and put it home for his fifth of the season. The visitors got an insurance goal in the 76th minute when Hintz finished a cross from Fein, who again beat a defender on the end-line.
Brandeis turned up its pressure in the final 15 minutes and finally made it pay off with just 2:45 left in regulation. The senior combination of Batista and Bradley hoped to rally in their final game. Batista found Bradley open in the box, and the captain sent a ball along the ground to the lower right corner for his third goal of the season. Bradley had another strike with 22 seconds on the clock, but it went wide, giving NYU the win.
Lynch suffered the loss with three saves, while Urbanski's two stops earned the win. Brandeis ends its season with a record of 6-10-2, 1-5-1 in the UAA, finishing in seventh place. NYU wraps up at 7-8-2, 2-3-2 UAA, tied for fifth in the Association.
